Synopsis

Captain America/Iron Man #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Years ago: Tony Stark bedded Veronica Eden and in the morning, when she reminds him of a tech proposal she made, he shoots it down as obsolete. She is angry at having two-years’ work dismissed so cavalierly and he promises to get her a job with SHIELD….

Now: Veronica Eden pleads guilty to having infiltrated SHIELD on behalf of Hydra, which she was competing to be the head of (losing to Baron Zemo). An armored truck taking her to prison is attacked by the alien hero Fifty-One; Iron Man arrives almost instantly and battles the alien and armed soldiers who pour out of a waiting truck. Captain America, who had been following the armored truck for Sam (the Falcon) Wilson, is also on the scene, fighting the soldiers as they whisk Eden away in a car; she fires at the tires of a passing bus and Cap and Shellhead must abandon the baddies to save the bus full of people from flying off the overpass. Afterward they suspect that she may be working with shady Senator Todd Baker who is trying to revive SHIELD and had Eden become head of Hydra, their secret teaming would lead to worldwide disaster. Tony gets a lead from his automated B.O.S.S. on a possible hiding place for the bad guys…

At the hideout, Fifty-One, who speaks no human language, shows Veronica Eden on his phone what he wants from her; she finds it reasonable. Then the wall is blown open and the Paladins enter, a new superteam featuring Pioneer, Vox, Prima Donna, and Think Tank. There is a battle and Cap and Iron Man arrive and the fighting intensifies. When the dust clears, Eden and Fifty-One are gone, she still promising to get him what he wants….

Captain America/Iron Man #1 Review by (December 8, 2021)

Review: Team-up book with Cap and Iron Man? Lead me to it! Cool story brings back Veronica Eden, villain of last year’s FALCON AND WINTER SOLDIER limited series and she was quite funny then as the wannabe head of Hydra. Here we see a little more into her head and learn she sees herself as saving the world by taking down superheroes and we’re sure to see more of that soon. The plot can be a little complicated to follow: Eden’s backstory from FAWS is relevant and she is now working with a new villain, a US Senator, whose possible scheme is given in an exposition heavy page. And then we have some (practically) new heroes whose powers and abilities aren’t made very clear so let’s hope for some more action from them next time. Overall, despite the crowded pages, an intriguing opening issue to the series.

Comments: Veronica Eden was introduced in FALCON AND WINTER SOLDIER (2020) also by Derek Landy. Fifty-One first appeared in SCARLET SPIDER (2012 series) #7-9. The Paladins (first appearance as a team) have no connection to the group of the same name that appeared in X-Men titles between 2004 and 2006. Individual debuts: Pioneer – MARVEL ZOMBIES SUPREME #2, Vox – AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #7, Prima Donna – AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #7, Think Tank – AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #12.
