Synopsis

Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

1926: Out late at night, Sarah Rogers is struck by her drunken husband Joseph in front of their young son Steven; a well-dressed lady shows up, beats Joseph with some judo moves and chases him off. The lady introduces herself as Elisa Sinclair and takes Sarah and Steven under her wing....

Captain America (the recently restored Steve Rogers) invades a train which has been captured by Hydra and is being used as a rolling bomb. The bomb is Robbie Dean Tomlin, an aimless youth who fell in with the Red Skull's revived Hydra and is now driving the train wearing a vest of explosives. Cap, backed up at base by Sharon Carter and Rick Jones, and in the field by Free Spirit and Jack Flag, manages to retake the train. But he wants to try to save Tomlin...he fails, Tomlin detonates the bomb and Cap is protected by his new shield....

Sharon and Maria Hill argue about how to handle the new Hydra, growing in popularity among youth. When Steve arrives, Hill informs them that they have found Baron Zemo....

Zemo is in the criminal sanctuary of Bagalia, where he is trying to recruit new members for his version of Hydra when Cap arrives, backed up by Jack Flag and Free Spirit. While the sidekicks take on the hapless henchmen, Cap pursues the jet Zemo departs in. Cap leaps atop the jet in midair, then enters and battles the villain as the captive Eric Solveig watches. Cap ends up hanging out of the cargo bay with Zemo about to swing a sword at him. Jack Flag arrives and takes out the baddie...

1926: Elisa Sinclair escorts Sarah and Steven home and gives her a pamphlet about an exciting new civic organization called Hydra....

...and then Cap hurls Jack out of the plane to his death. “Hail Hydra,” says Cap....

Review / Commentaries

Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 Review by (May 29, 2016)
Comments: Sam Cap and Winter Soldier are shown on the cover but do not appear inside. Free Spirit and Jack Flag were introduced toward the end of the run of Cap's flagship title (issues #431 and #434 respectively); Free hasn't been seen much but Jack showed up in THUNDERBOLTS and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (2008 series) #9-10. A hacker called Battlestar Johngaltica is mentioned; the name is a combination of TV series BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and John Galt, protagonist of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.

Review: So what's all the fuss about? Everyone is screaming like this will change the history of Captain America forever when it's only the latest attempt at attracting attention with a surprising plot twist. It's only a comic book. Does anyone really think that Marvel is going to retcon the entire 75-year history of their first great hero? And if they do, I'll admit that I was wrong—but I'll have to see proof that this isn't just for the length of a story arc (4-6 issues). No, my big complaint with the story is how Baron Zemo—the villain who singlehandedly brought down Bucky Cap—has turned into such a doofus, desperate to recruit these three losers as his new gang, and saying things like “Toodles.” This is the real shocker.
