In the skirmish in Latveria’s
capital, Salvation fires energy bolts at Captain America and his enemies,
killing Mara and Melor Sandu and others, while accusing Cap and his nation of
having put Doctor Doom in power and now that the people have their country
back, America walks in to seize it. Cap tries to fight him but Salvation gets
word that Doom’s weapon has been found and flies away….
SHIELD Agents Trevor Tambling and
Red Widow arrive at the huge Doctor Doom statue that General Klavik has said
was the site of the superweapon. So they blow up the statue and uncover a chest
underneath it. Red Widow then shoots Trevor in the head and departs with the
chest….
Back at the battlefield, Cap
leaves Joe Ramos to take care of the wounded, including Charles Castlemore, and
goes after Salvation on horseback. Cap and Joe share a parting salute. On the
way, Cap is contacted by Nick Fury Jr., patching him in on a call from General Thaddeus
Ross, who tells them that they have fouled up the mission so badly that Ross
feels justified in stepping in. “You’ve made America angry, Rogers….and you
wouldn’t like American when it’s angry.” [He is forgetting he has gone rogue
too….]
Red Widow turns over the chest to
Salvation who opens it...and discovers it is empty. Cap then arrives on
horseback and runs down the villain. Cap is attacked by Red Widow, so he knocks
her out while mocking her claims to being a true patriot. Salvation lectures
Cap on patriotism, mocking Cap’s comfortable life, noting that all power is
attained by violence, even in America. And this while he’s using his powers to
bounce Cap around. As he is about to kill Cap, Mirel, Cap’s friend on the farm,
shoots at him, giving Cap the distraction he needs to wreck his foe, whom he
denounces as just another tyrant who thinks he’s above his people…and then the
mob overwhelms and destroys Salvation…..
Cap then notes Trevor Tambling’s
body and reads the inscription at the base of the statue and realizes that the
Doom figure was pointing at a building across the plaza. He enters a building
where he finds Nick Fury, a woman with a gun ordering him away, and a boy who
calls himself Victor Von Doom, announcing that he is ready to lead Latveria….
And Red Hulk is on his way….
