Comments: Sin becomes the new Red Skull in this issue. Bucky appears in the Captain America outfit only in a photo flashed on a TV screen. Cap story has brief cameos by Iron Man, Hawkeye, and the Thing (plus the edge of Thor’s helmet). Black Widow does not appear in this episode of NOMAD.

Captain America #612 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

The new Captain America Bucky Barnes is facing trial for the crimes committed as the brainwashed Soviet assassin Winter Soldier. A judge has denied bail and Bucky is placed in a special area of Seagate Prison after his cybernetic arm is modified to be no stronger than a normal arm. Shortly Bucky meets with his defense attorney, Steve Rogers’ old girlfriend Bernie Rosenthal. Her strategy is to keep Bucky off the witness stand, making it easier to downplay his past and try to control the media spin. The key to Bucky’s exoneration and return to the role of Captain America will be public opinion. Moving on to hero matters, Steve tells Bucky that Master Man recently escaped from prison in Europe but his whereabouts are currently unknown….

But we know where he is: Master Man is leading a commando raid on the Kurtzberg Asylum to free Sin whom he regards as the new Red Skull….

Leaving the prison, Bernie tells Steve that their entire defense rests on proving Bucky was under mind-control, and even if he is acquitted he may never get his old life back. Steve tells her he is already working on obtaining expert witnesses on mind-control…. In Chicago, Falcon and Black Widow assault a heavily guarded penthouse to confront Dr. Faustus. The sinister psychiatrist offers to make a deal with the heroes for his aid; instead Falcon punches him out and they take him against his will….

In prison, Bucky mediates on the dark experience he is undergoing and realizes that not only does he want the mantle of Captain America back, he wants to deserve it….

As Bernie makes the rounds of talk shows, defending Bucky before the public, Sin dons the Red Skull uniform and vows to destroy him….
