Synopsis

Captain America (2025 series) #2 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The new Captain America, David Coulter, is in Afghanistan, celebrating the victory over the Taliban. Coulter is overjoyed but his local pal, Qasim, is not; he knows there’s more to restoring democracy than a few military victories. Coulter wonders why Qasim isn’t happier….

Today: Steve Rogers, Captain America, is with the new Howling Commandos on their mission inside Latveria. He is with Terry “Chill” Mendoza and Julie Slate, as well as the new Captain America, David Coulter. New Cap reminds Cap that this is an extraction mission only, they are not there to overthrow Doctor Doom. Cap insists he is still getting used to the new world, promising he won’t cause trouble. Cap starts to wonder about a world controlled by American military presence. The Commandos are confronted in the woods by a Doombot and Cap damages it with a hurled shield. And then they are surrounded by the resistance troops….

In Afghanistan, Coulter follows Qasim to an unfamiliar neighborhood; he hears shots and a local standing guard shoots at him; David hurls his Shield, knocking the man down and he bursts into the building where he heard the shots. He finds Qasim seriously wounded and another man dead. Qasim explains that the other man was a warlord who killed Qasim’s sister and Qasim realized that if he (Qasim) was free, so was the warlord to resume power….

Resistance leader Marius Wolf reveals to the Howling Commandos that they have captured and reprogrammed a Doombot and they are winning the war. Cap Coulter wants the info they need to rescue the American hostages, promising weapons in exchange for their help. Wolf tries to talk the Commandos into helping overthrow Doom. Coulter reminds him that wasn’t the deal. Cap asks Coulter to step outside and suggests he (Cap) go with Wolf and the partisans while Coulter leads the original mission; if anything he can be a distraction. Coulter is skeptical….

Coulter was soon shipped out of Afghanistan and to Iraq….

So Cap goes with the partisans while Coulter reminds him that they have to make the extraction point at the right time because General Ross won’t wait for them. Cap, Wolf, and the Doombot enter Doom’s castle via a secret entrance known to the Doombot. Cap wonders if he is trying to atone for failing to bring Hitler to justice. They come upon Doom sitting at his dinner table. Wolf prepares to shoot him but Cap stops him, as assassination isn’t justice. Then the Doombot turns on them and overpowers them—it was a trap all along. Doctor Doom recognizes Cap as the original Captain America as seen in the news—and welcomes him as a hero….

Review / Commentaries

Captain America (2025 series) #2 Review by (August 6, 2025)

Review: We alternate our Cap’s modern mission with new Cap’s (D. Coulter) history in the army. Surprisingly, our Cap tends to see things in black and white, losing the nuances. New Cap is the one with the wisdom of experience in the intricacies of the contemporary scene. And then Cap meets Doctor Doom, throwing everything into a tizzy. A very nice issue and for another view on the same topic, see CAPTAIN AMERICA: MAN OUT OF TIME (2010) by Mark Waid with Cap adjusting to the new situation without a more cynical Cap for counterbalance; reviewed on this site.

Comments: First (full) appearance of the new Captain America (David Coulter). Issue includes a tribute to the late Peter David, comic book writer responsible for much of Hulk’s later history.
