Synopsis

Falcon and Winter Soldier #2 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Bucky “Winter Soldier” Barnes and Sam “Falcon” Wilson, slowly recover from the beating delivered to them by The Natural, a deceptively youthful Hydra killer who took Veronica Eden with him. After a brief debate over whether Bucky should have killed him when he had the chance (Sam doesn’t want Bucky turning into the Punisher), they realize they still have the time to intercept the train carrying Zemo’s protégé, who is locked in a power struggle with a rival to be the new head of Hydra….

Falcon flies Winter Soldier to the train and they enter the last car where all the passengers turn out to be Hydra agents and they must fight their way to safety—followed by six more cars with the same situation. Sam and Bucky then enter the final car and confront Zemo’s protégé—who turns out to be Baron Zemo himself, whose death was “reversible.” Bucky wants to kill Zemo on the spot but Zemo informs him that his rival would become Supreme Hydra and he is planning a series of devastating terrorist attacks whereas Zemo would merely continue business as usual. Zemo also says that The Natural does not work for him and he had nothing to do with the killings at the Office of Federal Utilities (OFU), since Hydra was using the OFU’s leaked reports to recruit members. Zemo offers to work together, giving them The Natural’s parents’ address as a way to his rival; otherwise, he will leak to the media word of Bucky’s job with the OFU which would lead to prison for him….

Sam and Bucky go to Altoona, Pennsylvania, where they visit the parents of The Natural. The middle-aged couple comes out dressed in Captain America gear, claiming they are their biggest fans….

Review / Commentaries

Falcon and Winter Soldier #2 Review by (October 5, 2020)

Review: Man, oh man, this issue is a classic just for that five-page fight montage in the first car, followed by two pages taking them through the next six. The verbal duel with Zemo is also nice, laying out the heroes’ dilemma: help him defeat his rival or let the rival destroy the country. And I don’t think Bucky and Sam are up to that devil’s alternative, which always makes for good drama, especially in a superhero adventure. And the last page reveal of the wacky Cap fans gives a lot of promise to the next issue.

Comments: Baron Zemo was (apparently) killed in PUNISHER (2018 series) #16. The following (#3) issue was delayed for months by the COVID-19 pandemic.
