Synopsis

Falcon and Winter Soldier #5 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Veronica Eden departs the diner while The Natural takes on Falcon and Winter Soldier. But the two heroes have learned something: how to work together against the Hydra hot shot. They beat him up while instructing him that the secret to being Captain America lies not in how well you fight but in what you’re fighting for….

Meanwhile, Veronica Eden had left the diner only to be confronted by Baron Zemo and a band of Hydra agents who open fire on her. Hiding behind a car, she calls out “Order 66” and suddenly the Hydra agents who are loyal to her turn on the others, killing them. She tries to beat Zemo with a table leg but he holds her off, informing her that the Hydra agents present will side with whoever wins this duel and he is by far the more capable. Then Sam, Bucky, and The Natural come crashing out of the diner. Everything comes to a standstill and the five principals realize that no matter who wins the fight, most of them are going to be killed by the agents, so Sam, Bucky, Natural, Zemo, and Eden beat up the agents. They then decide that The Natural is the wild card and beat him to a pulp. Then Falcon tries to arrest them while Bucky makes the decision to kill them; Sam tries to talk him out of it with the usual “You’re not a killer” shtick but it’s The Natural that inadvertently reminds Bucky of what he’s supposed to be fighting for. By this time Veronica Eden has grabbed a gun and intends to kill them all but she is shot by an agent who reveals herself to be Sally McKenzie, the missing member of Sam’s support group. In the confusion, Baron Zemo escapes by jet pack but Eden is in custody….

Epilogue: Bucky has joined Sam Wilson’s veterans support group.

Review / Commentaries

Falcon and Winter Soldier #5 Review by (March 1, 2021)

Review: And the series wraps up on the same comically violent note it started on, with sides switching faster than the eye can follow and the punk kid called The Natural getting beaten up twice. The usual “What does Captain America stand for?” lecture is a lot more palatable when accompanied by slapstick comedy. And all the goofy twists and turns of plot, where everyone seems to switch sides constantly, were a hoot. Overall, this miniseries was a success because the usually grim Winter Soldier and Falcon had lightened up a bit and were able to ding their way into a more light-hearted (though still violent) adventure.
