Fear Itself: FF #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

One of the Serpent's hammers falls on Yancy Street, causing Thing to be possessed by Angrir, Breaker of Souls, a mad monster covered with roots each with a vicious looking mouth, constantly encouraging Thing to violence and destruction. Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman of the Future Foundation see what has happened to Ben and are determined to save him. They fly over to Ben’s location and, acting at the mouths’ instigation, Ben hurls his hammer, bringing down the Fantasti-Car. Sue throws up a force field to stop the hammer returning to Ben but it shatters. Reed tries to talk sense into Ben but the mouths have convinced him the others hate him and blame him for Johnny’s death. Ben stretches Reed out of shape and Sue tries to suffocate him by pushing a force field down his throat—but she can’t go through with it and Ben knows it. He blasts them and keeps moving. Ben is attacked by Dragon Man but Ben subdues him. Alicia Masters arrives on the scene to plead with Ben to stop. He picks her up and flings her aside and is about to slam the hammer down on her when Sue casts a force field over her to protect her. Ben/Angrir is annoyed and stomps off, telling Sue that the next time they meet, he will kill her. Sue uses CPR to revive Alicia who tells her that Ben is afraid, she can hear it in his voice….

Review / Commentaries

Fear Itself: FF #1 Review by (August 29, 2023)

Review: One of the smaller-scale tie-ins to the epic FEAR ITSELF event, this one contains the wanton destruction and devastation caused by one of the hammer-bearers but it is fundamentally about friendship. Reed, Sue, and Alicia (and by extension Dragon Man) are simply trying to rescue a friend, trapped as he is within a rampaging monster. But we do not see Ben’s viewpoint in this, as his mind is controlled by the hammer—until the very end when a glimpse of Ben’s heart comes through, as understood by Alicia. Very well done.

Comments: Story takes place immediately after Thing is possessed by Angrir, Breaker of Souls, in FEAR ITSELF #3. Dragon Man was altered by Valeria Richards to make him intelligent and pacifistic in FANTASTIC FOUR #579. Cory Hamscher and Rick Magyar collaborated on the inks.
