Before the Devil Knows We’re Dead Chapter Three

Synopsis

Fear Itself: Uncanny X-Force #3 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The Missouri Purifier arrives at the gates of Heaven, where he is greeted by an angelic Deadpool. The man is pleased to have made it to Heaven but Angelpool says there is one more test: reveal the whereabouts of Jonathan Standish and the nature of his plans. The detonation of the suicide bomb was an illusion created in the bad guy’s mind by Psylocke so that she could learn this info. The baddie is then executed by Fantomex. He reassures the crowd that the danger is past, only to realize the people are just as frightened of them as of the bad guys….

X-Force ponders Standish’s scheme: with the end of the world approaching, Standish is going to detonate the bomb that sends out an electromagnetic pulse to shut down the brains of everyone within a 25-mile radius, ostensibly sending them to Heaven before the Devil can get them. So it’s obvious he is going to detonate his bomb in New York City….

X-Force flies to NYC in EVA where they see an Air Force jet fire a missile at the Purifiers plane, unaware of the bomb aboard. Fantomex dispatches EVA to intercept the missile; she is hit and falls apart, dropping the team members into the sky. Logan tells Archangel to stop the bad guys’ plane as he grabs Psylocke, using his body to cushion her when they hit a roof. Deadpool just hits the roof while Fantomex guides EVA down to a safe landing on the city streets. Archangel kills the pilots with razor sharp blades from his wings then enters the cockpit and tries to take control. He can’t so he slices the wings off and guides the damaged plane to a safe landing in the street. Standish emerges to see they have come down in front of a cathedral, which he takes as a sign from God. Archangel confronts Standish, who shoots him down while ranting about the super-people being responsible for all the suffering in the world. He reaches for the button that will detonate the bomb…and Wolverine slices his hand off. Standish mutters that he just wanted to save people. Logan points out that the hero he murdered also wanted to save people and he takes off Standish’s head. They stand back to admire the cathedral….

Fear Itself: Uncanny X-Force #3 Review by (December 17, 2024)

Review: See issue #1 for full review.

Comments: The comic says that the bomb has a radius of 25 square miles; this makes no sense as a radius is measured in miles, not square miles. Simone Bianchi contributed to the cover inking. John Lucas is credited with an inking assist. Jared K. Fletcher is credited with the lettering design. Issue includes “Moment of Silence: A True Story,” reprinted from MOMENT OF SILENCE as a memorial on occasion of the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
