Hawkeye #2 Review by (January 5, 2021)

Review: So Hawkeye has a Dog sidekick? A story with only a modicum of humor would have been able to make a joke somewhere but this is the 90s so everything is dark and gritty. A snarling Hawkeye and Rover see the animals, then the humans, wiped out and they vow revenge. Grim, grim, grim.

Comments: Hawkeye names the creature construct Rover, a traditional, even cliched name for a dog; he also refers to Rover as Cujo, after the Stephen King novel/movie. Another 90s trope: Viper is wearing a full body costume with a tiny little jacket over it. Wait…is Dunroman supposed to sound like “Done roaming?” Nice name for a town out in the middle of nowhere.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Hawkeye #2 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Hawkeye rushes the wounded creature to the nearby town of Dunroman where the local physician and veterinarian work to save its life. They do and Hawkeye names it Rover; soon they find Secret Empire copters flying overhead searching for the hero and the creature. Rover draws pictures to tell Hawkeye and the doctors that he was being held captive and experimented on before he escaped. Hawkeye and Rover return to the installation where the Secret Empire is packing up their equipment for departure. They sneak into the ventilation system and locate Viper, Trick Shot, and Javelynn. Clint sees Viper execute a subordinate for arguing with her. Rover then finds the room he escaped from with the rest of his pack/tribe locked up in cages; they watch in horror as two guards enter and shoot down all of the caged creatures. Rover attacks the guards and he and Hawkeye fight their way out. They return to Dunroman to discover that the Secret Empire has destroyed the town and killed everyone in it. Hawkeye vows retaliation….
