At the Raft, Killgrave the Purple Man has taken control of Shroud’s and Elektra’s minds and is commanding the latter to kill the former….

At the Yancy Street ruins, Brady Briedel decides to use the name Monster that people are calling him; he realizes that his exposure to Mr. Fear’s gas has made him something fearsome that manifests himself as the viewer’s greatest fear. He walks through the rubble, onlookers seeing him as a giant rat, a fire burning out of control, a clown, gloating over what he had done to the two superheroes Gargoyle and Paladin. Misty Knight arrives and under her touch the petrified Gargoyle resumes his fleshly form and Paladin recovers a bit from his beating. They warn her about the new monster that adapts its form for its prey. Misty borrows a stun gun from Paladin and goes out hunting for it because she is Control, the one in charge….

At the Raft, Elektra is holding her sai at Shroud’s throat when she suddenly turns on Killgrave, giving him a beating. She revives a dazed Shroud who wants to know how she overcame Killgrave’s pheromones; she held her breath. (“For five minutes?” “I’m a ninja.”) Killgrave sneaks away, heading to a remote part of the building…which collapses, sending him and the rubble into the river….

On Yancy Street, Misty Knight searches for the Monster who is creeping up behind her. She turns and sees him as her greatest fear…the child she lost because it was never real. The child Briedel panics and runs away into the ruins. Paladin comforts her and the three heroes set out in search of others who need help….

On the far side of the Hudson River, Killgrave pulls himself from the water, rests a moment, then starts laughing….

Heroes for Hire (2011 series) #11 Review by (August 26, 2025)

Review: And we wrap up our two exciting plots. First Elektra kicks Killgrave’s tail, having tricked him and overcome his influence. Seeing Killgrave being beaten is satisfying as he is one of Marvel’s most obnoxious baddies. But the second story has the twist. At last we learn what Monster’s powers are—and he’s a boggart from Harry Potter, a creature which takes the form of one’s greatest fear. And the twist? Misty’s fear isn’t a formidable one but a very personal one, the phantom pregnancy with Danny Rand. Yeah, this plot revelation was a stupid move, handwaving away a complication the next writer didn’t want to deal with but anyone familiar with the loss of a child will be moved simply by Misty’s emotional response. It was an unexpected moment and may have justified the dumb plot complication all by itself.

And Kyle Hotz’s elongated forms take on an intensity in Monster’s scenes, making for a more sinister set of fears and nightmares.

Comments: Issue bannered FEAR ITSELF, as a tie-in to that event. Part three of three parts. Story takes place between FEAR ITSELF #3 and 4. Misty’s pregnancy “began” in IMMORTAL IRON FIST #27 and was revealed to be an illusion caused by Danny’s powers in I AM AN AVENGER #1. Purple Man returns in VILLAINS FOR HIRE. Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.
