Synopsis

Heroes for Hire (2011 series) #9 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Hammers are falling from the sky, in the Fear Itself event. Misty Knight calls on all of her Heroes for Hire to respond to the worldwide emergency. On Yancy Street, Thing is possessed by Angrir, Breaker of Souls, and Paladin stands alone against him, firing guns uselessly. Then Gargoyle, dispatched by Misty, swoops down and plucks him from danger. They plan to lure Thing away from the area but have no idea how….

Nearby, criminal chemist Brady Briedel has been buried in the rubble of his lab where he was making gas for Mister Fear and he is transformed….

At the Raft, Shroud is sizing up the situation when he is attacked by a trio of escaped criminals whom he takes down in mere moments. Misty tells him that his disaster is global and that the Thunderbolts are on their way to the scene. Shroud is attacked by the huge brutish Mash-Up and the pyromaniac Firefight. Then Elektra arrives to join him against the bad guys. Elektra reveals she has been hired by Misty to help out, being paid double her usual rate to not kill anyone. Then a mob of escaped criminals bursts in….

On Yancy Street, Brady Briedel emerges from the rubble and people flee in terror: he has been transformed into a huge black, horned monster….

In the Raft’s Infirmary, Puppet Master lies on life support. He receives a visit from the Purple Man, saying goodbye before he departs, recognizing Masters’ value in helping him build an empire. Shroud and Elektra confront Killgrave and then they discover he has his own army of killers entering behind them….

Review / Commentaries

Heroes for Hire (2011 series) #9 Review by (July 29, 2025)

Review: One of the best Fear Itself tie-ins starts with a possessed Thing smashing things and a couple of heroes being helpless on the scene. Once my eyesight adjusted to the somewhat chaotic art by Kyle Hotz/Bob Almond, things grew clearer. We have the origin of a genuinely scary looking new villain, whose power won’t be revealed for two issues. And then we’re given the unlikely team-up of Elektra and Shroud to stop a prison break, eventually facing the Purple Man and his army of mind-slaves. All the pieces are placed on the board for the next two issues to move around with delightful precision.

Comments: Issue bannered FEAR ITSELF, as a tie-in to that event. Part one of three parts. Story takes place between FEAR ITSELF #3 and 4. First appearance/origin of Monster (Brady Briedel) who appears in this three-issue arc then moves over to VILLAINS FOR HIRE. First and only appearances of Mash-Up and FirefightWritten by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.
