Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Hulk Smash! #2 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

As the enraged Hulk stands amid the chaos and wreckage of the Army’s latest efforts to contain him, Lt. Patrick D. Mitchell and Major Lucas Parker oversee the damage. Showing his contempt for the deserter Mitchell, Parker suggests they insert grenades into a fissure in a huge rock outcropping which Parker plans to detonate with a gunshot, causing the giant mass of rock to fall on Hulk. Parker tells Mitchell that he failed his men by failing to lead. Mitchell says they were sold out by the brass and Parker tells him the brass have always sold out the troops but he still has a responsibility to his soldiers. He then tells of an experience during the Vietnam War where he risked his life to support the troops in a dangerous mission because that’s what he was sworn to do….

Hulk arrives and the guys taunt him until he moves under the outcropping. Parker sets off the grenades, the huge mass of rock falls on Hulk…and Hulk isn’t bothered. He smashes the plateau the men are on. In the seconds before he falls to his death, Parker tosses his gun to Mitchell and tells him to “keep fighting.”

A short time later, Mitchell encounters four men, the last of his company. They want to know what to do; he tells them that they have to keep Hulk from reaching Reno. He proposes using a rocket to detonate the shells in a wrecked tank while Hulk is next to it. He gives his men the option of retiring but they all join the plan. They fire on Hulk to get his attention and make him rush toward them; as Hulk passes a tank they blow it up and Hulk is hurled through the air, rising angrier than ever. He slams the ground, scattering the soldiers and rushes on them. Mitchell draws a handgun to force Hulk to stop, insisting that it is his responsibility to protect his men and to die for them if necessary. Hulk ponders the unusual concept of self-sacrifice for a moment then walks away. Mitchell leads his men home….
