Immortal Thor Annual #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Story continued from AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL (2024) #1.

In the Casino Cosmic, the Champion of the Universe Tryco Slatterus fights in the cybo-gladiator games, this time against Killcrab…and he wins in under three seconds. The games organizer Profiteer is fed up as fewer people want to buy tickets to the games because Tryco always wins. Tryco promises Profiteer that after a vacation, he will have regained the Power Stone and then he will challenge real cosmic powers like Galactus and the Living Tribunal….

In Asgard, Thor is concerned about Gaia’s having opened the gates of Utgard, releasing the Elder Gods on the universe. He battled Toranos and won but by wit, not strength. And his wits are now clouded by the influence of Amora the Enchantress. So he asks Loki where to find the Power Stone. Loki warns him but can’t help him….

On the planet Znrrgax IV, a gang of hoods are trying to carjack a guy’s valuable Hovercedes when the local superhero, Prince of Power (born Prince Otherone), now wearing a shirt and calling himself Powerstone, arrives on the scene, flattening the guy’s car, and takes down the bad guys, all thanks to the Power Stone he once ate. And then the Champion of the Universe arrives….

Thor stops by the offices of Blackjack O'Hare, former mercenary leader and Otherone’s boss, looking for the crackpot hero. Seconds later, Otherone comes crashing through the door, hurled by Tryco Slatterus, who recognizes Thor from an earlier battle. Tryco picks a fight, Thor knocks him down and places Mjolnir on his chest so he can’t rise. Otherone decides to help and uses his Power Push on Mjolnir, which now decides the floors below are not worthy, dropping Tryco down multiple levels, leading to the landlord evicting Blackjack on the spot. Tryco now has the unconscious hero in his hand, drawing on his power. Thor summons Mjolnir but with its increased power, it breaks Thor’s wrist when he catches it. They fight but Thor chooses to use the hammer for a very small deed: he releases a single rain drop, which splashes against Otherone’s face, waking him up. And now Powerstone uses his Power Pull ability to drain Tryco of all of his strength. While admiring himself, Powerstone uses the word “apex” and decides it would be the perfect superhero name. And, as he cannot be separated from the Power Stone, Thor calls up the cosmic winds to take him to a place where seasoned heroes can train him to use his power responsibly: New York City…and Blackjack O’Hare is pulled along for the ride….

Story continues in MS. MARVEL ANNUAL #1.

Immortal Thor Annual #1 Review by (July 17, 2024)

Review: Well, this is strange: part three of this Thanos-centered crossover epic is a flat-out comedy with one of the stupidest superheroes ever and one who goes by three different superhero names at that. Since the first one is Prince of Power this could be taken as a homage to the Bob Layton Hercules series with its sci-fi milieu and a happy-go-lucky hero. If so, this is quite entertaining. And in the end, Thor takes the dude back to Earth to…what? Get more serious? Can’t imagine that. Well, it’s up to Ms. Marvel now.

Comments: Part three of the INFINITY WATCH event. Prince of Power was introduced in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (2020) #3 and following; his name becomes Powerstone in this issue, then Apex. Blackjack O’Hare was first seen in INCREDIBLE HULK #271 which was also the debut of Rocket Raccoon; O’Hare has since appeared in other Rocket/Guardians of the Galaxy titles, last seen in X-MEN: RED #16-18. Tryco Slatterus a/k/a Champion of the Universe debuted in MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE ANNUAL #7 where he met Thor; after that he appeared in Silver Surfer and Thanos titles, plus adventures with She-Hulk and Deadpool; Thanos took the Power Stone from him in THANOS QUEST #1. Thor’s battle with Toranos took place in IMMORTAL THOR #1-5. And Otherone’s arrival is a homage to the cover of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS by Frank Miller. Issue includes a tribute to late MCU production designer Ray Chan.
