Synopsis

Invaders Now! #2 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars
Union Jack is stunned at Steve Rogers’ reference to the time during the War when the Invaders murdered a town full of innocent people. This UJ, who is not the same man who was present for the WW2 incident, is stunned when he learns that Steve is being quite literal. The other Invaders agree though they are still bothered by the event. Aarkus, the original Vision, shows him what happened in a misty vision….
The Invaders (Captain America, Bucky, Human Torch, Toro, Sub-Mariner, Spitfire, Union Jack) were in the Netherlands fighting the Uberkommandos, Hitler’s own superteam (Master Man, Warrior Woman, Baron Blood, Iron Cross, U-Man) to discover the doomsday weapon being developed by Arnim Zola at a Nazi-held castle. The enemy suddenly retreat through the village toward the castle but it’s a trap. Horribly deformed people are released in the village and anyone they touch becomes infected too. Cap orders a wall of fire to hold them back while they decide what to do. Assuming that if Arnim Zola created the disease, he might have an antidote, Torch flies to the castle and roasts Zola alive, following that with blowing up the doomsday weapon, a rocket set to launch the disease into allied territory. Zola’s assistants insist there is no antidote and that Zola himself seemed unconcerned with safety (we know why: he is having his brain transferred into a weird robotic body). So Namor concludes that, with no antidote, the only thing they can do is to kill the infected villagers. Each is a walking doomsday weapon and the mineral used in the virus’ creation is only found in this area so all the infected are right here in the fiery enclosure. No other option is feasible, even Captain America sees that. One of the infected pleads with Cap to not let them and their loved ones to suffer this way. Union Jack refuses to have anything to do with this so the others harden their hearts and slaughter those infected with the gruesome virus….
Now the Invaders are realizing that the infected man in the Netherlands was released as a warning. Aarkus senses magic involved and the new Union Jack agrees to join their mission. Aarkus teleports them all to the Vliet, the village where it happened—and they are attacked by the newer incarnation of the Uberkommandos (Warrior Woman, U-Man, new Iron Cross, new Master Man and two of the latter’s henchmen)….

Review / Commentaries

Invaders Now! #2 Review by (August 31, 2020)
Review: The series takes an even grimmer turn and we learn the nightmare is real. The Invaders, led by Captain America, were forced to kill innocent people who had been transformed into walking weapons by the villainous Arnim Zola. It's part of the horrors of war because sometimes there are no easy answers. Dark, grim, and violent—and unlikely to get much lighter in the coming issues. I’m game, how about you?

Comments: In the modern scenes, this is the grandnephew of the original Master Man (introduced in CAPTAIN AMERICA (2005 series) #18) and an all new Iron Cross. The great documentary filmmaker Ken Burns is mentioned. Christos Gage and Alex Ross are co-credited with the plot.
