Synopsis

Invaders Now! #3 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars
The Invaders, teleported to Vliet to follow up the mysterious return of Arnim Zola’s bioweapon, find themselves under attack by the new version of the Uberkommandos. The Human Torch and Toro take down the new Iron Cross while Captain America defeats Master Man and Spitfire teams with Union Jack to clobber Master Man’s two burly henchmen. But Namor is struggling against U-Man and Warrior Woman is putting a beating on Steve Rogers. Vision (Aarkus) detects a magic ritual in play which explains why the two original villains (Warrior Woman and U-Man) are unbeatable. Meanwhile, the lake is draining and the wartime village is rebuilding itself. Spitfire finds the source of the magic in the old church; Aarkus and Union Jack enter to find the place full of mad monsters. Union Jack is injured and mutates into one of the monsters. A surviving villager with the Spear of Destiny reveals himself as the power behind the madness; he was a young villager, deformed but not destroyed by the virus, who devoted himself to the study of the occult to see if he could bring back his dead family and neighbors. He failed but he can take vengeance against the Invaders who killed them—and now he has the Spear of Destiny and has made a pact with Shuma-Gorath to recreate the day the village died. And now outside, a complex battle ends with the Invaders defeating their enemies. Aarkus explains the situation to his allies and they go to the church where they confront the mad wizard. Steve Rogers tells the wizard that they surrender. The wizard has mutated the current villagers to serve his will and now Steve asks for the chance to find a cure for the villagers. They won’t interfere with the wizard’s spell and they will trade their lives for the lives of the original victims of the plague….

Review / Commentaries

Invaders Now! #3 Review by (September 7, 2020)
Review: A lot of battling, some mysticism—and a surprise ending. The battles between the two superteams are cool and mouthy Nazis being clobbered is always fun. The mysticism is the occult vengeance plan of a bad guy with a (fairly) legitimate gripe against the heroes. And the surprise ending? The heroes offer to die to atone for their sins. While self-sacrifice is an integral part of a hero’s calling, it usually doesn’t manifest itself this openly so the next issue should be something amazing.

Comments: The bad guy is never called by any name in the series so I’ve chose to call him the (lower-case) wizard. Christos Gage and Alex Ross are co-credited with the plot.
