Synopsis

Invincible Iron Man #1 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Tony Stark's having a mid-life crisis. Pepper Potts complains that he's left her to run the Reslient company for weeks now, and there's no sign of him coming back to work. But Tony's questioning the whole basis of his life. Which doesn't stop him from picking up a girl in a bar.

In Buenos Aires Maya Hansen is killed by an AIM agent. But not before she triggers a failsafe message which interrupts Tony's latest fling. The pre-recorded message indicates that someone has made her tell them about the Extremis process.

Stark infiltrates an auction where AIM is selling Extremis. They tout it as a treatment that can be programmed to modify people in any way you choose. They detect him invading their system with a computer virus.

Tony's briefcase contains a type of memory plastic, which expands to form a version of his new Iron Man armour. He faces some generic demo examples of Extremis-modded agents, just enhanced strength and speed with fiery breath. But Stark has had years to develop countermeasures to such simple versions, and takes them down with tasers.

He persuades the AIM auctioneer to admit that they have already sold Extremis 4 times.

Review / Commentaries

Invincible Iron Man #1 Review by (November 11, 2012)
Tony Stark was asking what it's all about and keeping away from work in the last issue of the previous series. He even went off into space for a while. But that hasn't stopped him from creating a new armour (not just the expanding 'plastic' version) for this issue. Maya Hansen was the inventor of the Extremis process in Warren Ellis's Iron Man (2005) series. The changes this wrought in Tony Stark have featured heavily in both that series and the succeeding Matt Fraction run. They enabled him to have the 'Extremis' armour incorporated within his body. They also effectively replaced his brain with a computer system. AIM is a long-running group of scientific bad guys. They were originally the tech arm of Hydra, but long since struck out on their own. This is part 1 of 5. Presumably the other 4 parts will see Iron Man tracking down the Extremis users.
