Synopsis

Iron Man #296 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars
Tony Stark runs his new Iron Man remote armor through a series of tests (the previous one was destroyed last issue) and declares it good. Tony attends a high-level staff meeting and discovers who at the company approved selling Stark's nuclear materials to A.I.M. and that Alessandro Brannex, A.I.M.'s CEO, has refused all offers to buy it back. Tony fires the two foolish execs and heads out to talk to Brannex himself. In the hall he encounters his physical therapist Veronica Benning who is angry that he keeps postponing their sessions. They part and we learn that Benning is falling in love with Tony....

Later that day, Tony Stark's LMD arrives at A.I.M. HQ in Boca Caliente where he is greeted by CEO Brannex. MODAM, at the center of the firm's computer network, recognizes Stark as an automaton and orders the guards to shoot him. At home, Tony is angered by this and dispatches the Iron Man remote to swoop down on Boca Caliente, releasing semi-autonomous drones using hologram tech to look like an army of Iron Men. As the Iron Men battle the A.I.M. guards on their sky-cycles, MODAM decides to take the field herself. Thus she misses Omega Red arriving on the island and hacking into the database to confirm that his enemy Barankova is there and he intends to kill her. During the air battle, MODAM is able to seize Iron Man in her metal tentacles and deliver a psycho-blast that feeds back and causes Tony to have a seizure. As the monstrous MODAM prepares to peel the armor off him, she is challenged by Omega Red, who has learned she is his old enemy Olinka Barankova; MODAM, her memories of her previous life erased, no longer understands this grudge but prepares to fight him anyway....

Review / Commentaries

Iron Man #296 Review by (October 16, 2018)
Comments: Part one of two parts. X-Men villain Omega Red was fairly new at this time, having been introduced in X-MEN Vol 2 #4 in January 1992. MODAM had most recently appeared as one of Superia's Femizons in CAPTAIN AMERICA #387-392.

Review: Tony Stark once again demonstrates he's an industrialist with a heart of gold, firing two execs who sold nuclear materials to a terrorist organization for big bucks. On the down side we have yet another workplace romance shaping up; I know Tony has a reputation to uphold but can he keep his hands off a female employee for once? Fortunately a thrilling sequence of an aerial battle with a multitude of Iron Men, A.I.M. guards and MODAM (ick, what a horrible character) makes up for any and all shortcomings. And a fiercely-drawn Omega Red has much promise for the next issue.
