Whiplash Returns!

Synopsis

Iron Man (1968 series) #62 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 3.5 stars
Prologue: The villainous Whiplash is practicing with his new steel whip, shredding a statue of his enemy Iron Man, preparing for round 2….
Tony Stark and Pepper (Potts) Hogan visit his Cincinnati plant and are greeted by the manager Vicki Snow. They also meet researcher Mark Scott, secretly Whiplash; Scott is engaged to Vicki, but only to get her job, expecting her to quit after the wedding. As Vicki takes Tony on a tour of the building, Scott switches to his Whiplash identity and attacks Tony. When the villain is distracted by a security guard, Tony dashes off and returns as Iron Man. The hero then discovers that Whiplash has micro-shields to protect him from Iron Man’s repulsor rays. The baddie quickly destroys the ray devices in Iron Man’s hands with a few flicks of his whip and moves in for the kill. The Avenger removes his damaged gauntlets and tosses magnetized discs at the villain and they hinder movement of his whip. Iron Man then punches out his foe, who staggers back and topples a huge piece of machinery onto the hero and escapes….
Epilogue: Vicki, inspired to a new dedication to her work by Iron Man’s example, breaks her engagement to Mark Scott over his sexist attitudes and scheming, leaving the embittered villain to go back to lashing a statue of Iron Man in his spare time….

Review / Commentaries

Iron Man (1968 series) #62 Review by (November 5, 2013)
Review: Extremely cool opening with Whiplash slowly cracking apart the Iron Man statue—and the ensuing story actually makes him a serious threat (thanks especially to the fine art by Russell and Romita)! Wonder why the writer had to make him such a male chauvinist jerk? In fact, his scheme didn’t make sense at all. Step One: Wait until Tony Stark visits the place where I work. Step Two: Be introduced to him. Step Three: Sneak out and put on my villain costume and come back to attack him. Step Four: Wait for Iron Man to arrive. Step Five: Victory! Then I’ll marry my boss and get her job when she quits to have babies. Wait, if this guy has a prestigious job doing R&D for Stark, why is he messing around being a bad guy on the side? [Same reason Paste Pot Pete doesn’t just sell his glue formula to 3M for a million bucks, I guess.] Really, it looks as though this guy worked his way up the corporate ladder for years just so he could be in place to spring a trap. No matter, the final panel makes a nice bookend even if the story in between is a bit of a shaggy dog.

Comments: Whiplash was previously seen in the story arc spanning TALES OF SUSPENSE #98 to IRON MAN (1968) #1.
