Iron Man 258 #3 Review by (April 30, 2022)
Comments: Plotted by Bob Layton and David Michelinie. This alternate reality has been designated Earth-13793. First appearance of War Machine in this continuity. The account of Rhodey’s failure as Iron Man is in issue #215.

Review: Action packed issue has basically two things happening: a) Iron Man fights a bunch of armored foes and b) Rhodey psyches himself up to put on the War Machine armor. And both heroes claim the victory. And can anyone say that Shellhead employing various weapons against overwhelming odds was more of a hero than Rhodey who had to overcome deep psychological trauma? I cheer for Rhodey, hero of a modern era.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Iron Man 258 #3 Synopsis by T Vernon
Iron Man flies over to Justin Hammer’s mobile island sanctuary and is automatically electrified by the security system. He tells Hammer he has come with a warning and, getting fed up, starts destroying the security devices. In order to save money, Hammer turns the rest off and listens to his visitor….

James Rhodes tries to leave the Stark lab where he has been working in secret but the Tony Stark 2.0 Entity knows he is there and now knows where to find Justin Hammer….

As Iron Man explains the situation to Hammer, the island is invaded by an army of Mandroids, SHIELD’s armored soldiers. As Shellhead fights them off, Hammer runs for safety. Meanwhile, on the Helicarrier, Nick Fury is informed that a troop of Mandroids has gone off on their own, as though controlled by an outside source. A scan shows Iron Man that the Mandroids have human operators inside, stunned by low-level voltage, so he can’t be as violent as he needs to. He employs magnetism to make them all crash together but things are about to get worse….

Seeking to escape the lab, Rhodey uncovers a gray prototype armor and considers donning it but he recalls the problems that came from filling in as Iron Man and gives up on that plan….

Iron Man is attacked by a squad of Dreadnoughts but because they are robots with no human operators inside, he can unleash all of his power. But the Mandroids are coordinating with the Dreadnoughts and Iron Man is in trouble….

Rhodey finally steels up his courage and puts on the War Machine armor to help Tony….

Justin Hammer takes off in a private escape vehicle so Iron Man goes ahead and sinks the island with a pulse bolt to the fuel supply. The Dreadnoughts shut down and sink while the Mandroid operators come to their senses and return to their aircraft….

Rhodey blows the door off the lab and goers searching for Tony…

…who is flying into space toward Justin Hammer’s orbiting space station. He reaches the entrance just as his oxygen supply runs out. He begs Hammer, watching through a window, to let him in. Hammer, who has long held a grudge against Iron Man, refuses….
