Synopsis

Iron Man Vs. Whiplash #1 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4.5 stars
Volstok, Russia: Father-son inventors Igor and Anton Vanko are working in their lab when their village is attacked by someone who appears to be Iron Man. Anton sends his father to the safety of a shelter while he fires at the attacker with a laser weapon. The entire city is destroyed, including the shelter, but Anton manages to blow some of the enemy’s armor off….

Six months later, Tony Stark is brought up on charges at the International Criminal Court at the Hague. Surveillance photos and witnesses show Iron Man as the attacker, presumably hired by Vladimir Putin to destroy Volstok, center of a resistance movement against him. The biosignature picked up from the attacker belongs to Tony Stark. Tony has no alibi for the day of the attacks, working alone in his lab. A huge payment of cash was made to Stark’s account around the time of the attack. Red Guardian testifies how when he and Crimson Dynamo sought to capture Stark he donned the Iron Man armor and fought back like a guilty man until Pepper Potts advised him via radio to surrender. The evidence is overwhelming….

In Volstok, Anton Vanko creates a suit out of the armor shot off of Iron Man, complete with electric whips, vowing revenge against Stark as Whiplash….

Iron Man Vs. Whiplash #1 Review by (October 30, 2021)
Comments: Intended as a lead-in to IRON MAN 2 (the movie). The OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE sets this story in Earth-616 and the new Whiplash Anton Vanko is a different man from the original Crimson Dynamo of that name. Nikolai Krylenko as the Red Guardian and Dmitri Bukharin as Crimson Dynamo were introduced in IRON MAN #109. Script by Marc Guggenheim and Brannon Braga. A variant cover done in Super Hero Squad style is a homage to TALES OF SUSPENSE #53.

Review: Man, this looks bad for Tony Stark. We saw what happened and even we think he’s guilty! Well, maybe not but this comic does a great job of stacking up irrefutable evidence against our hero in a highly dramatic way while also delivering quite a bit of action as Shellhead battles Red Guardian and Crimson Dynamo, climaxing with a more sinister version of Whiplash than we have ever seen, with that spade-like iron mask and electric whips. Bring it on!
