As Jane Foster lies dying in a mansion trapped in time, Thor faces his enemies Mister Hyde and the Cobra. The Thunder God finds himself in dire straits as his two foes have had their power doubled by the scheming Loki (last issue). Unable to hold them off, Thor commands a mighty gale to blow them back while he escapes with Jane. He runs a gauntlet of traps, overcoming each one until he finds a safe room where he can leave his beloved. In Asgard, Odin watches impassively until Balder sings a ballad of Odin’s own forbidden love. Though Loki warns him of trickery, the All-Father nevertheless orders Loki (bad move) to journey to the home of Hardol the Healer to obtain the cure for Jane’s affliction (not to be confused with Jane’s Addiction). As Loki congratulates himself, the other Aesir take Loki into custody while Balder undertakes the quest. Back on Earth, Thor is having a difficult time dealing with the inhumanly agile Cobra and the supernaturally strong Hyde. His break comes when the two villains begin quarrelling over who will be the one to kill their hated foe. Cobra then flips Hyde at Thor who decks him with a punch. Cobra fires off poison gas capsules which Thor deflects. Cobra vanishes into a duct to escape his own death trap and Hyde flees by smashing through the walls, with Thor in pursuit. Thor catches up with Hyde and tosses him into a blast ray, which paralyzes the brutish baddie. The Thunder God then rewires the electrical system (which he learned how to do from Iron Man!) and sends high voltage through the building’s structure forcing Cobra from hiding so he can easily be captured. Meanwhile, Balder has braved the Swamps of Endless Flame, the Death Phantom, the Forest of Eternal Nightmare Plants, and the Valley of Swords to reach Hardol the Healer. Thor decides to lift the time warp and do everything he can as Don Blake to save Jane, when suddenly Balder’s sword drops from the heavens with the needed medicine. As the sword returns to its owner, Thor races to administer the cure and gives thanks to his father.

Rating: 5 stars
Returning from a mission for Odin, Thor, Loki, and Balder are walking through a forest when they are surprised by a lone warrior. This warrior, Sigurd, inhabits the forest and challenges the three from Asgard to battle. While Loki goads Thor into fighting the foe, Balder recalls that Sigurd has some secret. Thor and Sigurd face each other and Thor shatters his enemy’s hammer with a blow from his own, throwing Sigurd to the ground. The warrior however rises stronger than before. This happens several more times, with Sigurd becoming stronger every time he is knocked down. At this, Balder recalls that Sigurd is the son of the Earth Sprites who empower him every time he touches the earth. Thor then hooks his hammer to Sigurd’s belt and hurls him to an asteroid in space where he will never again be a menace. Loki, who led his companions on this path to see Thor defeated, leaves disappointed.

Review / Commentaries

Journey Into Mystery #111 Review by (October 1, 2011)
Review: Here are the fireworks: Thor battles two villains who are a match for him; Jane Foster is dying, putting some real pressure on him; Balder undertakes a dangerous quest to save Jane; and Thor learns something new about his dad. This ish has everything! And I’m with the Daily Thor guy: I’m ready to read a Balder comic right now!

Comments: 1. That is one cool cover. Don Blake does not appear. Hidden talents: Thor has learned how to be an electrician from Iron Man. Story continued from last issue. 2. This Sigurd is not the same person as the hero of the Volsung saga (also known as Siegfried); his power is similar to that of Antaeus from Greek myth.
