Story Name:

Chapter Three: A Storm of Prayers

Synopsis

King Thor #3 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

King Thor is able to burst partway out of the ocean of blackness that Gorr the God Butcher has created. As Gorr tries to push Thor’s head back into the dark, the Goddesses of Thunder arrive to do battle with the villain—and they brought help…

Interlude: The Goddesses were on the planet Indigarr which looks like a dried-up garden paradise. Shadrak’s book indicates that this world was once a desert, its gods slain by Gorr but a little girl prayed to Thor and he answered by sending rain and the world was saved by a god who answered prayer. So the Goddesses pray—and the gods of Indigarr return, led by the God of Thorns. And now…

The Gods of Indigarr join in the battle, pointing out to Gorr that they are his legacy since they would not have returned had Gorr not killed the original gods of Indigarr, and they sing a hymn to Gorr, the Savior of Gods, which causes the villain to scream bitterly. So the Goddesses take him down and Atli lops off his head with her sword. And then the stars go out: Gorr is not dead but has merely become the Necrosword and he is now filling the cosmos. Thor is rescued from the black ocean by the Goddesses’ pet shark and Loki by Toothgnasher. As Loki opens the book to finish all their sagas, Thor joins the Indigarr deities in fighting for the fate of all existence. On Midgard, the humans pray to Thor for deliverance, and Thor faces his final enemy, Gorr who has created the All-Black, the Necroverse….

Review / Commentaries

King Thor #3 Review by (November 20, 2019)

Review: Well, that was a twist I never saw coming…a positive portrayal of gods? And the efficacy of prayer? From Jason Aaron? Well, I guess having the God Butcher butcher all the gods would be a downer to end his lengthy run on. So now I’m intrigued and looking forward to the final issue, to see the End of All Things, making it a bit late to get new gods into the game.

Side note: I cannot divine (pun intended) the Indigarr gods’ reasoning in calling their return Gorr’s legacy; that’s like thanking Hitler for the modern state of Israel. Sure, without the Holocaust there wouldn’t have been a push for a Jewish homeland at that time but I really don’t think he deserved any credit for it.

Comments: Das Pastoras did the art and color for the scenes of the Goddesses of Thunder on Indigarr; Thor had visited that planet in THOR, GOD OF THUNDER #6-11, near the beginning of Jason Aaron’s run.
