Rating: 4 stars

A man coming home late from Christmas shopping, his arms loaded with packages, drops one on the sidewalk. He turns to pick it up and comes face to face with the tall, emaciated looking Hulk and flees in panic. Hulk is delighted to take the present but he is spotted by a black Symbiote. It tries to absorb Hulk but is repulsed when Hulk grabs on to an open electrical connection on a broken streetlamp. Two police officers confront Hulk who tries to blame the Symbiote but it is no longer there. The cops shoot at Hulk who leaps away as the Symbiote stealthily approaches the cops….

Hulk lands in front of a department store which has toys in the window. He is delighted as he sees a Mekkanix building set—but is suddenly reminded of his father destroying his Mekkanix set as a child. In anger, Hulk smashes the window and reverts to Bruce Banner, with his Joe Fixit personality in charge. The Symbiote arrives, having absorbed the two cops and turned into a two-headed skeletal monster. Joe/Bruce dashes into the store, cutting his foot on broken glass. The Symbiote follows, tracking the blood stains. The monster reaches the music department and Bruce plays Greg Lake’s “I Believe in Father Christmas” at full volume, shaking the monster to pieces, which he finishes off by burning. Then Hulk finds the toy department and starts to play….

King in Black: the Immortal Hulk #1 Review by (December 22, 2020)
Review: Nice little tale that does not need word to tell in its fullness. We have the childlike Hulk whom we haven’t seen in a very long time for a nice little holiday tale about horrible monsters and a sense of wonder. Not much to say other than that this story can be enjoyed without any reference to the larger event it ties into which is rare for this sort of thing.

Comments: One-shot tie-in to the KING IN BLACK event, taking place between KING IN BLACK #1 and 2. Story is told without dialogue. The department store, Mantlo’s, is named after longtime Marvel writer Bill Mantlo. Colors by Frank Martin and Erik Arcineiga
