Story Name:

A Small Circle of Hate!

Synopsis

Marvel Team-Up #105 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

Luke Cage and Iron Fist fly to the Southwest in pursuit of some criminals when they see the Hulk below. Hulk, however, thinks the plane is after him so he leaps up and knocks off a wing, afterward bounding away. The plane is brought down roughly by the pilot Carole but Danny is knocked out. A family of desert dwellers watch Luke moving the wrecked plane and assume he is the Hulk. Paw demands the “Hulk” help them with a task, threatening to shoot Carole if he refuses. So Luke agrees and they go off into the desert, having hidden Danny from the family’s view. After much walking, they come to a hill where a rockslide has sealed off the family’s water supply and Paw demands that Luke clear it away. Luke sees that there is one huge boulder that he cannot move but starts clearing the smaller rocks away….

Back at the crash site, Danny awakens and changes into his Iron Fist outfit, meditating to deal with his aches and pains. And then the Hulk finds him. Hulk recognizes him for an enemy and attacks. IF fights him but his martial arts moves do nothing. He prepares for his Iron Fist and the glow of his power mesmerizes Hulk into calming down enough to transform into Bruce Banner. And knowing Luke would not have abandoned him, they follow the tracks to see what’s happened to him….

Luke has cleared away the rubble from the spring except for the biggest boulder. The family’s little girl Patty offers Luke some of the family’s small supply of water. Iron Fist and Bruce arrive just as Paw is beating Luke for “stealing” their water, calling him “Hulk.” The sight of people abusing “Hulk,” so upsets Bruce that he transforms into Hulk and goes to attack the family. Luke and Danny try to prevent him by hitting and dodging. Eventually, by concerted effort, they maneuver Hulk into smashing the giant boulder, releasing the spring. Army copters searching for Hulk arrive and he looks around, taking in the copters, Luke and Danny, and the family, all perceived as enemies and he hesitates. Paw takes aim to shoot Hulk and Patty tries to stop him, only to be slapped by Paw for her troubles; enraged, Luke punches out the old man. Hulk, confused and realizing he has no friends, flees. The army captures the family and Patty asks if she can come with Luke…so they take her back to New York with them….

Back in New York, Power Man and Iron Fist are hired to take part in a fashion show, escorting models on the runway as a gimmick. Misty Knight, Colleen Wing, and their new friend Patty are in the audience. But the models draw weapons to rob the audience. Misty and Colleen hide Patty under the stage then swing into action clobbering baddies while Luke is confronted by a model with a gun that fires explosive bullets; he bluffs her into surrendering the gun, warning her that a ricochet would be dangerous to her. Iron Fist meanwhile, pursues some of the bad ladies out into the story, using a mannequin as a missile. The last crook takes Patty hostage but the little girl, using a trick she saw Colleen do in training, takes down the lady herself. Danny notes that culture shock doesn’t seem to be bothering Patty….

Marvel Team-Up #105 Review by (February 5, 2025)

Review: Uhh, Dude? Power Man and Iron Fist is already a team-up so we’re having Hulk team up with a team-up. Sounds like that would cost more but no, it’s the same price as always. Anyway, it’s a dumb story, with some silly looking art, most notably a bizarre pic of Hulk running away on page 16. Couldn’t believe this was by Carmine Infantino, one of my favorite DC artists of the 1960s. First there’s a gang of hillbillies in the wrong part of the country, none of whom seem to have a purpose in the story except for the old man and the little girl. The absurdly prolonged battle between the Heroes and Hulk to trick him into breaking a rock is a low point. Carole the pilot vanishes for most of the story, snuck into the background on the last page because the artist suddenly remembered her. And then there’s the matter of abducting a little girl at the end of the story to sneak into the next story….

The second story is the highlight of the issue by default. The art isn’t any better but the story lacks the logical problems of the first one. Well, aside from models hiring Power Man and Iron Fist to be at the scene of a robbery they are planning, that is. And it is never revealed who Patty’s legal guardian is and why they let the Heroes for Hire and the Daughters of the Dragon borrow her.

Comments: Power Man and Iron Fist previously met Hulk in MARVEL TEAM-UP ANNUAL #3. And we never find out if Luke and Danny completed the mission they came to the Southwest for.

Second story: Title is a play on “Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing” and it’s the cleverest thing in the issue. Last appearance of Patty.
