Synopsis

Marvelous Adventures of Gus Beezer and Spider-Man (2004 series) #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

While imagining he is Spider-Man, Gus Beezer wins the footrace in gym class. His victory goes to his head and soon he is bragging to everyone about his super-powers, even when it gets him sent to the principal’s office. At home he is annoying his family, except for his father who has always wanted an athletic son. His irritated sister Emily challenges him to a race, claiming she can beat him. Over the next five days, Gus and Emily race because every day she has a new trick to distract him at the starting line. Everyone makes fun of him and Emily rubs it in, with Gus imagining he is Spider-Man defeating Emily as the Lizard…

The next day, Gus is sent to the Daily Bugle building to spend Career Day with his cousin Peter Parker. J. Jonah Jameson overhears Pete telling Gus he could be a superhero someday; JJJ denounces heroes, especially Spider-Man and Pete must whisk Gus away and tie him up to keep him from arguing with the boss. There follows an awkward lecture on when to stand up to a bully and when not to, interrupted by Pete spotting the Green Goblin and Vulture robbing a bank across the street. He pushes Gus, still bound to a chair, into JJJ’s office to argue with the boss about Spidey, while Pete changes into his Spider-Man togs to fight the bad guys. Later, Pete gives Gus an autographed photo of Spidey and Gus totally geeks out….

The next day, Gus challenges Emily to another race, only this time he pulls all of her previous tricks on her and wins easily.

Gus shows us another comic he’s written and drawn: “The Terror from Beyond the Fence.” Marvel Kid and Marvel Dog return from an adventure to discover new people have moved into the house next door. They have a cat which Zabu recognizes as evil. Later, Zabu goes outside and is waylaid by the cat, wearing a cyborg suit; the cat clobbers him and then lures Zabu into chasing it up a tree. Gus is told to put Zabu in his cage—but Gus leaves it unlocked. That night, Marvel Dog goes out and confronts the enemy cat, revealing itself to be KIT-E7, the fatal feline! The two super-pets do battle, destroying the neighbors’ home in the process. As the neighbors depart, only Zabu sees that they are all really evil cats in disguise!

Review / Commentaries

Marvelous Adventures of Gus Beezer and Spider-Man (2004 series) #1 Review by (January 29, 2025)

Review: The final Gus Beezer comic, fourth in a series, is the best of the lot, amore solid story and more appealing art by the Gurihiru guys, responsible for some of Marvel’s best all-ages comics. And the best use of Marvel characters, especially J. Jonah Jameson. Cool!

Comments: Final Gus Beezer comic, fourth in a series. The second story runs along the bottom of the main story. Illustration team Gurihiru is also credited for the art.
