Synopsis

Monica Rambeau: Photon (2023 series) #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Monica Rambeau goes for a delightful trip through the ocean, enjoying what she once feared….

She goes to New York for a snack and meets an older couple who recognize her as Captain Marvel; the old lady is thrilled to meet her so Monica, explaining that she now goes by Photon, poses for a selfie with her. Monica recalls how she lost her powers in battle with Leviathan (Marrina) which nearly ruined her life….

She appears suddenly in the Sanctum Sanctorum, while Dr. Strange and Wong are in the middle of a game of chess, to deliver the Stone of Hala, which had been stolen and recovered and was entrusted to Photon as the only one who could convey it safely to Strange. A sudden loud noise outside startles them and Photon dashes outside to investigate while Strange and Wong protect the Stone in case this is an attempt to steal it again. Outside, Photon meets Hinge, a tall villain who bends and folds in a bizarre manner. Spider-Man stops by and offers to help. It takes the two heroes a few minutes to coordinate their moves and Photon blasts Hinge to settle the matter. Hinge is unmasked as Dr. Yesenia Rosario, surprising Spidey who knows her as a brilliant scientist. Yesenia freaks out, screaming that “Monica Rambeau is going to destroy the universe” before she is magically subdued by Wong….

Monica teleports home and her phone rings, a call from her cousin Caleb complaining about his boyfriend Tyler. She offers to come help but he gets angry and hangs up on her. She then receives a call from her father and teleports over there to talk about the frustration of dealing with Caleb. He advises her to save some of her compassion for herself or she’ll burn out. Mom comes home and invites her to stay for dinner but she declines, flaying through the universe because she just wants some space….

Monica Rambeau: Photon (2023 series) #1 Review by (June 3, 2025)

Review: “Save some compassion for yourself” is the lesson needed by Monica Rambeau, the former Captain Marvel 2 and the only non-Kree-related CM. I’ve always thought of her as one of the least appreciated superheroes, always trying to prove she was good enough and ultimately failing. So she lost her powers and then receded into the background for a while. Now she’s back and seems happy, with old lady fans and supportive parents and annoying relatives and the ability to zip into outer space just to clear her head. So what’s the problem? She has somehow caused the universe to start falling apart. So through issues #2-4, Monica is bouncing around alternate realities, like an MCU version of EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, aided by a more woke version of the Beyonder. And she is suffering. This miniseries is pretty cool, showing us a heroine at the end of her sanity. So the final issue is a bit of a letdown. Monica has been told a few times that she needs to uncover her deepest desire and we’re led to expect something complicated but no. Her deepest desire is to realize she can’t do everything and to relax a bit. Hmmm, that ws easy—and then when she admits she can’t do everything, she does everything and restores the entire universe in a split second then goes home to relax. Despite that ending that seems overly simplistic, Monica, a very likeable character, shines through the rest of the miniseries.

Comments: Monica lost her Captain Marvel powers in the battle with the transformed Marrina from AVENGERS #291-293. The Stone of Hala was stolen in IRONHEART #8. Hinge was introduced in MS MARVEL TEAM-UP #1, then in MARVEL TEAM UP (2019) #2-3. Issue includes a tribute to Stan Lee on his 100th birthday.
