Synopsis

New Avengers Annual #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The bitter Wonder Man addresses his Revengers (Anti-Venom, Ethan Edwards, Goliath (Tom Foster), Atlas (Erik Josten), D-Man, Devil-Slayer, Century, Captain Ultra) and tells them of the evils and crimes perpetuated by the Avengers. He lists their five biggest crimes as Ultron, the mad Scarlet Witch, Civil War, the Hulk, and Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers. And Simon proposes that they be pro-active in fighting the Avengers….

The next day, Wonder Man and his team wait until Luke Cage and Jessica Jones send their daughter Danielle out with her nanny Squirrel Girl before they assault Avengers Mansion because they aren’t the bad guys. Atlas smashes through the front door like a bulldozer and the Avengers look up to see their assembled foes coming through the gates.  The assembled heroes (Spider-Man, Wolverine, Thing, Ms. Marvel, Doctor Strange, plus Luke and Jessica, with Wong and liaison Victoria Hand) take action. As the fighting goes on, Hand sends out an alert to the other Avengers to come and help. She also identifies the assailants and calls out their weaknesses to give her side the edge. The entire building collapses, the one left standing is the Thing and the invaders take turns punching him into insensibility before blowing him up. The last Avenger, Ms. Marvel, plummets from the sky after her high-altitude battle with Wonder Man, who touches down and praises his team for their performance. Next target: Avengers Tower….

New Avengers Annual #1 Review by (August 10, 2021)

Review: Y’know, Simon “Wonder Man” Williams makes a pretty good case that the Avengers are the bad guys and should be shut down. And he and his powerful gang back it up with violence. I’m not sure who I’m supposed to be cheering for in this nearly all-battle issue but it’s a thriller.

Comments: Wonder Man comes back and apologizes for all the brouhaha in AVENGERS (2010 series) #31-34 and, yes, it takes a while. Issue includes reprinted material commemorating the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks; text and illustrations from MOMENT OF SILENCE (#1 (2002) and HEROES #1.
