Synopsis

Sam Wilson, Captain America (2025 series) #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

A Harlem soup kitchen opens for the day but those arriving for a meal are attacked by vampires. Captain America Sam Wilson arrives, accompanied by Redwing leading a flock of birds, and drives them all off. Captain America Steve Rogers was waiting nearby in case Sam Cap needed any help but he did not. Sam says he needs to pick up his cousin Billie for a family function and invites Steve along….

It turns out to be a birthday party for the elderly Isaiah Bradley, the first Black Captain America and many Black superheroes are present at the cookout. Billie is thrilled to see all the heroes, especially Isaiah. She trades barbs with War Machine and Patriot and pals around with Misty Knight. Billie approaches Sam with a business proposition: A company called Eaglestar is launching a land grant company to reimburse Black farmers who lost their land when denied federal grants and she promised them she could get her cousin Captain America to be their spokesman. Sam is annoyed about being signed up without his okay so Billie lays a guilt trip on him. Rhodey mentions that Eaglestar was a shady paramilitary organization but there are new people in charge and they may have changed. The Avengers among them are called away on a mission and Sam is excused so he can go off with Billie….

In the New Mexico desert, Sam and Billie are picked up by a flying disc carrying Eaglestar CEO Dennis Harmon and carried off to Skydream, one of a series of floating cities with advanced technology and abundant farmland. They are introduced to Dr. Gwendolyn Cangza of Wakanda, Chief Tech Officer, and Robert Maverick, Head of Security. They are shown the farms and chat with the farmers, mainly Black people. Redwing panics, sensing danger and the city is attacked by mechanical pterodactyls. Cap fights them off…then he recognizes the deadly machines are Eaglestar technology. Harmon then claims that Sam Cap is an LMD. Maverick, hating traitors, transforms into Red Hulk and attacks Cap….

Sam Wilson, Captain America (2025 series) #1 Review by (January 1, 2025)

Review: Created to tie-in with the forthcoming MCU film CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD, this series brings together Sam Cap and Red Hulk…but it’s not what it seems. As Red Hulk Thunderbolt Ross, central to the movie, is currently prisoner of Doctor Doom in the comics, waiting for the year’s big crossover event, ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM. So here we have the other Red Hulk: Robert Maverick, who most of us were not aware of, showing up in various Avengers titles since 2015. The issue is divided between a tribute to Isaiah Bradley, reminding us of the story of the first Black Captain America and leading into the undercurrent of racial tension in the issue. This continues with the Eaglestar half of the issue, a high-tech city designed in part to redress injustices of the US Government against African Americans, as portrayed in the second story.  And Sam Cap was designed to address racial issues in the USA, which was occasionally overdone in the Nick Spencer era. Anyway, this is the first issue of a limited series so we’ve only seen the intro stuff, we’ll have to see where this goes.

Comments: Isaiah Bradley’s story is told in TRUTH: RED WHITE AND BLACK. First appearance of Sam’s cousin Billie. Eaglestar International first appeared as the bad guys in WAR MACHINE (2009) #1-5; first appearance of Dennis Harmon. Characters at the cookout include Storm, Luke Cage, Spider-Man (Miles Morales), Ironheart, Blade, Photon, Cloak, Blue Marvel, Doctor Voodoo, and a guy with a sword I don't recognize. Greg Pak and Evan Narcisse are the credited writers. Second story lacks credits; likely Pak and Narcisse are writers with Valentine De Landro as artist (he’s mentioned in the credits to the first story as “with”). Issue includes a tribute to the late Greg Hildebrandt, celebrated illustrator, notably of the original poster for STAR WARS (1977) with his twin brother Tim.
