Strange Changes [Part 3]: On Borrowed Time

Synopsis

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #17 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

The sorceress Malachi has used the Moebius Stone to unravel time and the effects are becoming known around the region: plants growing at accelerated rates, children growing older and the elderly getting younger in minutes, buildings collapsing after reverting to unbaked clay and mortar. Malachi has Dr. Druid and Shadowoman magically bound and is successfully holding off Luke Cage, Deadpool, and the Cadaver, the revived corpse of a kid named Cody. As they fight demonic creatures, Shadowoman slips free of her bonds and envelops Malachi in her darkness, allowing the rapidly aging Druid to rejuvenate himself. But Malachi is able to overcome Shadowoman’s darkness and hurl her into a void. Druid finds her and she is amazed that she had survived, realizing that Druid is keeping some secret from her. Cage attacks Malachi and she causes him to age backwards to before he had gained superpowers; Deadpool hurls a sword to him as Malachi again takes down Cadaver. She calls up the petrified body of her love Korahn. But Korahn doesn’t want to be revived since the afterlife is a beautiful journey to another place. While she is distracted, Deadpool sneaks up behind her and skewers her with a sword and the two lovers pass into death together….

Dr. Druid takes the Moebius Stone and is tempted to use it to alter history as he sees fit. Strange, the Sorcerer’s Doppelganger, appears and clobbers Druid, demanding the Stone for his master. Cadaver tries to stop him but Strange merely knocks him down and takes his magic sword—which rejects him. Strange fights Deadpool and Shadowoman as Cadaver strikes back. In the chaos, Cage takes the Moebius Stone and throws it to Druid who, after a bit of thought, commands it to destroy itself. Everything that has been altered returns to its original state. Strange, knowing the Stone no longer exists, returns to its master. Druid shouts to Strange a message for his master, vowing revenge for embroiling him in Dr. Strange’s dirty work. Dr. Strange hears the message but is unconcerned as the Secret Defenders are now Druid’s concern….

In South Central Texas, the latest in a series of bizarre deaths, a man with his lungs full of bees, has occurred. Covert government agent R.G. Mathieson decides to call in a specialist, Dr. Anthony Druid….

Review / Commentaries

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #17 Review by (July 23, 2025)

Review: Mostly chaos in this rambling conclusion to the story arc. Malachi knocks everyone around until her plans come to naught with some irony. Then the weird Strange (or strange Weird) shows up to pad the page count a bit more for no clear reason. Then Druid destroys the stone and we’re back to the new status quo. Which doesn’t sit well with Dr. Druid but nobody likes him anyway. And he’s with us for the rest of this series. Pity.

Comments: First appearance of R.G. MathiesonDeadpool refers to TV programming block Nick at Nite, family friendly actress Donna Reed (1921-1986), talk show host David Letterman (1947- ), and advice column “Dear Abby” (1956- ). The being called Strange is a doppelganger made from magical energy by Dr. Strange to act as his proxy; he first appeared in DOCTOR STRANGE, SORCERER SUPREME #61 and would eventually be named Paradox. The reader is directed to DOCTOR STRANGE, SORCERER SUPREME ANNUAL #4 for more on the mysterious Strange. Written by Tom Brevoort and Mike Kanterovich.
