Synopsis

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #7 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The Winds of Watoomb are devastating Manhattan accompanied by violent lightning strikes. Captain America and the police are on the scene at the mercy of the evil elements; Cap tries to explain what is going on to the lead detective but he knows it can only get worse….

In the Death Dimension, the wizard Xandu with his comatose bride Melinda Morrison by his side, has enslaved skeletal versions of Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, and the Scarlet Witch but these aren’t the real heroes. Strange mocks Xandu for creating undead parodies of his captive enemies. Xandu is planning to merge the Death Dimension and Earth with Death dominant and he will rule over the new realm. The demon lords resent this plan so Xandu blasts the leader of the group, cowing the others. Wanda reminds the villain that he endangers them all by being in the same world as his unconscious lover. The heroes realize that Xandu is insane but he responds that questions of sanity are beside the point so long as he holds the Wand of Watoomb. Xandu frees the heroes who quickly discover that their powers are ineffective against him. He sets the death demons on them, allowing them a brief lead. Strange, Spidey, and Wanda slog through a miasmic swamp filled with a thickened liquid. Then Wanda is seized by a tentacle which Spidey’s Spidey Sense did not detect. Strange’s weakened spells have some effect on the monster while Spidey uses a spear fashioned from a tree branch. As they continue on the run, Strange realizes he was a fool for not bringing Captain America, who would have been an asset in this situation. They hide beneath the water while the demon lords go by; then, on Strange’s direction they head for Castle Skull….

Xandu is still presiding over the two worlds slowly merging; Melinda awakens from her trance and pleads with him not to let the two realms merge. The heroes arrive and there is a battle and then the outer curves of the worlds touch…

,,,leading to more upheavals back on Earth. As Cap watches in horror, the dead rise from their graves and head toward the city and only Cap is there to stop them….

And Xandu gloats as though his victory is certain….

Review / Commentaries

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #7 Review by (May 28, 2025)

Review: A nice little action-oriented tale trying for an adrenaline rush that the best comics feature. The Most Dangerous Game plot would have been a bit better if the geography of the Death Dimension was clearer. What powers the heroes have that still work also seems a bit inconsistent. The interesting bit which didn’t make it into the synopsis is the fact that Dr. Strange’s own Tarot card came out upside down (mentioned last issue) which indicates that there is something quirky that needs to be considered but what? Strange fussed about it a lot in issue #6 and almost as much in this issue. It will not be a big reveal next time. But will Captain America call in the other Avengers for this Night of the Living Dead pastiche? Probably not.

Comments: The title comes from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Act 5, Scene 5; see next issue. Spidey refers to “The Most Dangerous Game” a classic story by Richard Connell about a madman who hunts people for sport. The letters page includes one by Stephen Alcala, who may be the actor who voiced the Collector in a WHAT IF? video game. Or not.
