Synopsis

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #8 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

As Captain America tries to stop the hordes of walking dead in Manhattan, Xandu is in the Death Dimension, holding Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, and Scarlet Witch at bay with the powers of the Wand of Watoomb. Melinda Morrison begs Xandu to stop but Earth and the Death Dimension continue to merge. Xandu shuts Melinda up by immobilizing her with a spell as the demon lords pledge allegiance to her and Xandu as co-rulers of the combined realm. And then Xandu ramps up the power….

Back on Earth, Cap and the police try to stop the dead but bullets are useless and the cops must fall back against the relentless march….

As the villain’s power increases, Strange realizes that Captain America is the key to things and transports the Crystal of Kadavus to Cap. Cap picks it up and its rays course through him painfully and knock down the walking dead. But the real reason: the Crystal then draws Melinda through the portal to land in Cap’s arms, awakened from her coma. Angry, Xandu teleports to New York to retrieve his bride. The villain knocks Cap down with some winds and turns the police bullets against them. Cap tries to carry Melinda off but he is tripped by a monster hand and falls, knocking himself out. But pain wracks Xandu and Melinda, the Earth itself trying to cast them out. Cap, recovered, tells Melinda to return to the Death Dimension with Xandu and be a true queen over the realm. She understands and begs Xandu to take her back…

…and he does. Melinda asks Dr. Strange to make her queen of this sphere as Cap wants him to. Strange understands and fills Melinda with his power and the power of the demon lords and the result? Queen Melinda is now more powerful than Xandu…and she doesn’t want to be his mate. She did love him but his attempts to force her to be his bride killed any love she had for him so she now banishes him from the Death Dimension forever, dropping him into the New York cemetery. The dead dissolve and the two merging worlds split apart once more….

Melinda thanks Spidey and Wanda for keeping the demons at bay, Strange for merging them into her, and asks them to thank Cap for giving her the idea. Spidey has the Wand of Watoomb, wrapped up for safekeeping. They try to figure out the significance of the upside-down card but Melinda tells them not to bother, they will never get it. She sends the trio home…

…where they meet Cap who has concocted a cover story for them and they depart. The police take Xandu away and note that he is crying. And in the Death Dimension, Melinda knows she has lost the only man she will ever love and she will never see him again, alive or dead….

Review / Commentaries

Secret Defenders, The (1993 series) #8 Review by (June 3, 2025)

Review: And that’s that. A story whose plot is nearly all magical mumbo jumbo that rarely makes sense. (How did Cap know that making Melinda queen would have that result? Beats me.) Don’t ask too many questions, which is literally Melinda’s advice when the question of the upside-down card is raised. So just jump in and let the streams of comic book adventure sweep you along and leap out on the other side, with a happy look on your face. And we’ll all hope that the next story arc is as much fun.

Comments: The title comes from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Act 5, Scene 5; it follows the line used as the title for the previous issue. Xandu’s only subsequent appearance is in PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL (2006) #4, at Stilt-Man’s wake at the Bar with No Name, which was bombed by the Punisher so maybe Xandu is dead? The Wand of Watoomb is next seen, without Xandu, in AVENGERS/SQUADRON SUPREME '98 ANNUAL. Final appearance of Melinda Morrison. Strange refers to Melinda as a package that “absolutely positively has to be there…today,” an echo of FedEx’s 1970s-80s slogan, only they promised it overnight.
