Synopsis

Silver Surfer/Thor Annual #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Silver Surfer heads for a vacation on the tropical island of Kahoolawe only to find the place under attack by a pair of Ice Giants from Asgard. After rescuing a father and son from danger’s path, SS unleashes the Power Cosmic on the giants, knocking them out. Deducing that a dimensional rift must have opened between Earth and Asgard, the Surfer decides to contact Thor….

Meanwhile, in a nameless Limbo in its own dimension, a godlike villain called Millennius bemoans his exile there by the gods of Asgard. But now he has detected an energy contrail in the cosmos which can power his escape from his prison by means of a machine captured from an alien enemy…

At Avengers Mansion, the Avengers (Captain America, Justice, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Firestar) assemble in reaction to a UFO alert. Thor, Iron Man, and Firestar are dispatched to meet it. But they all calm down when the see it is the Silver Surfer….

Thor and the Surfer look on their homeworlds and discover both Asgard and Zenn-La have been destroyed. They start the perilous journey into the past to learn what happened to Asgard but Millennius recognizes the energy contrail he has been looking for and snatches it out of time, ending up with the Silver Surfer and Thor in his Limbo. The two heroes are surrounded by the villain’s globlike servitors who surround and enclose Thor and the Surfer, rendering them unconscious….

The Silver Surfer awakens inside a huge machine which is draining off the Power Cosmic to permit Millennius to escape his prison, then embark on his project to save the universe. Oh and the operation will result in the Surfer’s death….

Elsewhere, Thor is in chains and Millennius awakens him with a bucket of water. Thor recognizes the villain’s name from Asgardian lore as a fiend. The two fight, with Thor denouncing Millennius as a madman and murderer while the latter defends his plan to exterminate all mortals in the universe which, since mortals live such brief and miserable lives, would be an act of mercy. By sheer act of will, Surfer breaks free from the massive machine but sees the breach in the fabric of reality is still growing. He attempts to blast it closed but that only accelerates its growth. Surfer rescues Thor from the villain but they all race for the rift, Millennius seeking to escape, the Surfer hoping Thor will be able to close it. The Surfer now fights Millennius; while defending the existence of the human race, he orders his board to smash the villain’s throat. Meanwhile, Thor closes the rift by channeling the lifeforce that flows though every Asgardian. He then rushes to rescue SS from the baddie. And by combining their powers they defeat Millennius. They bury him in the center of his planet, Thor adding the blocks of his castle to seal him in. Then they take off so they aren’t around when Mill frees himself….

Thor and Silver Surfer return to New York, vowing to be ready when Millennius returns….

And Millennius, still exiled to his planet, vows to escape and resume his crusade….

Silver Surfer/Thor Annual #1 Review by (September 17, 2024)

Review: That ugly 90s cover ushers us into a decent enough story featuring yet another godlike villain who requires two more godlike heroes to vanquish him. The odd angular art is acceptable if a bit offbeat. The story, though, is another sci-fi epic full of manufactured concepts that either help or hinder the heroes as the narrative requires. It is truly apocalyptic in its action but it’s all a farrago of crazy stuff pretending to make sense.

Comments: Only appearance of Millennius as of 2024. Story takes place after the events of AVENGERS vol. 3 #3; for the Silver Surfer it occurs between pages 4 and 5 of SILVER SURFER (1987) #134.
