Synopsis

Superior Avengers (2025 series) #2 synopsis by ?
Rating: 4 stars
Kristoff Vernard has brought rehabilitated supervillains back from a future to show how successful Dr Doom's reign (in One World Under Doom) will be, and he's promoting them as the Superior Avengers. But he doesn't know that they are secretly plotting against Doom. They have established a secret base in the abandoned Prison 42 in the Negative Zone. Last issue they brought an object to add to a collection they're storing there.

The group aren't completely simpatico, and in particular the armoured char called Abomination reveres Doom. He's only helping the others because their intent is to save their future world, including Dr Doom, from a dire fate. He asks Ghost if she too can sense the holy magic of Doom in the artefact but the female Dr Octopus reminds him (again) that Dr Doom didn't 'invent' magic, he just gathered it all together which wrecked their world. Male Onslaught psionically checks the Prison is still empty. Ghost says there's not much magic energy in their find so it likely won't be missed. Malekith comments that he says the same about every limb he cuts off a victim. Killmonger (another female) says every bit helps.

We see the giant Arcane Warhead they're building as Killmonger attaches the new find to add its power. Onslaught wants them to adopt his suggestion to power it up faster, but leader KM tells him (again) that killing the Scarlet Witch would bring down the wrath of both Avengers and X-Men, so the psychic can just keep his private grudge against Wanda Maximoff to himself. They all shield their eyes against the flash as the new power beds in, and Doc Ock comments that it was more than she expected.

We now get another glimpse into that future 128 years ahead. Killmonger stabs Dr Doom with a blade made from Mysterium salvaged by Onslaught from Krakoa. Malekith and future versions of Bullseye and Wasp are also in the fight. Doom asks why they've turned on him after he made them his trusted servants. Onslaught adds a mental blow as he says that while Doom has been sitting in his castle hoarding all the magic in the world, that world has crumbled to ruin. Mortally injured Doom claims that his magic has been keeping otherdimensional wolves from their door. But elsewhere Abomination (and some other metal char?) are holding off Doombots while Ock breaks into the vault. But what they find inside is nothing but the body of Doom's old dinosaur steed. All the magic artefacts have gone. Doom laughs and says he's destroyed them because all the magic is now within *him*. Until KM chops his head off. (And last issue we saw the result was an invasion from the otherdimensional realms.)

Back in the now, over a background of various Superior Avengers doing various heroic deeds, we see several interviews with Kristoff where he makes various points. As well as the team coming from a future blossoming under Doom's rule and being composed of chars who would probably before Doom have been villains, he points out that they deserve the title Avengers because they are here doing good work while the old Avengers (and many other heroes) are conspicuous by their absence (because they've been sent to limbo by Dormammu in OWUD#3).

We see the whole team going after Diablo in the Yucatan Peninsular (in front of a Mayan pyramid), who was 1 of the Raft escapees (in OWUD#3). He magically hurls a large amount of earth at them which Abomination's shield deflects, and then prepares to throw an alchemical vial at them but Killmonger kicks it out of his hand. Then Malekith holds him while Ock drains him of his magic, and Onslaught wipes that part of his memory before they take him in. Ock and Abomination go to the Neg Zone to add the energy to their Machine, leaving 2 of Ock's hologram drones in their place.

Kristoff arrives in a plane to take them all home to Doomstadt. Ghost notes Killmonger telling him it might be time to take the next step. Back home KV dismisses the team but he and the team leader will have a 1-on-1 discussion about tactics. Later Ghost phases through a wall to see them in bed together.

Review / Commentaries

Superior Avengers (2025 series) #2 Review by (May 30, 2025)
Kyle Hotz is artist again for the flashforward to Anno Doom 128, this time with Rachelle Rosenberg as colourist.

I would guess that Malekith the Asgardian Dark Elf is the same char as the version in the current day. Onslaught might be the same being too. But Abomination, Dr Octopus, Ghost and Killmonger certainly aren't.

The alchemist Diablo is a Lee&Kirby creation from Fantastic Four #30. His last big app was in the Tarot mini-series followed by minor roles in FF(2018)#38, working for the (non-magical) Wizard, and Scarlet Witch (2023) #7. Who knows what landed him in the Raft since then?

Doom's old dinosaur steed is the alternate reality dinosaur Dr Doom from #12-13 of the current FF which Doom was seen riding in One World Under Doom #1,3 and Avengers #25.
