Story Name:

I Learned the Dread Secret of the Blip!

Synopsis

Tales to Astonish (1959 series) #15 synopsis by Julio M2
Rating: 3.5 stars

A radar operator sees an unusual unidentified blip on his instruments. Shortly after, the area experienced a sudden malfunction in electrical devices. By using an electrometer, the man located the origin of the electricity drain in a nearby cave. Much to his surprise, it was a colossal alien being composed of electricity.

Blip”, as the man called him, meant no harm. He briefly paused on our planet to recharge before continuing his journey back to his home world. In response to their electrical issues, the locals showed up with guns to find out what was to blame. In a state of panic, they attacked Blip and accused the radar operator of being a traitor in cahoots with the monster.

Blip emerged victorious after a quick battle. Having regained full energy, Blip left our planet, but not without expressing his disappointment in humans for their violent and fearful behavior, similar to savages. Had they acted more civilized, he could have imparted valuable knowledge.

I Dared Enter the Forbidden World!

Writer: Stan Lee. Penciler/Inker: Don Heck. Colorist: Stan Goldberg. Letterer: Ray Holloway.

Synopsis

By Julio M2
Rating: 4 stars

During a hunting expedition in Africa, John and Derek found a rare medallion with a mastodon engraving. Believing it would lead them to the fabled great elephant’s graveyard, they wondered for days, avid to find the ivory that would make them immensely wealthy. While tracking an old elephant, they accidentally discovered a place filled with trees that emitted a radiant glow. Believing they had discovered the perfect location, Derek injured John by shooting him in the leg because he refused to share the ivory, then proceeded into the illuminated forest by himself.

After encountering a vast graveyard full of bones, tall werewolf-like green creatures surrounded a panicked Derek! These creatures were Martians, and they collected the ivory. One called Antogg explained to the hunter that the mastodon, the predecessor to elephants, was originally from Mars. Ivory is vital for them, but Mars is not adequate for animal life. So eons ago, Martians brought mastodon specimens to raise on Earth. And to this day, they harvest the ivory from dead pachyderms, who walk into the hidden graveyard, controlled by the aliens.

Knowing too much, Derek becomes their prisoner and slave. And locals rescue John, relieved of not having entered the forbidden glowing forest. Some things are better left undiscovered.

Writer: Stan Lee. Penciler/Inker: Paul Reinman. Colorist: Stan Goldberg. Letterer: Ray Holloway.

Synopsis

By Julio M2
Rating: 4.5 stars

Fleeing from authorities in Egypt, a criminal takes refuge in Tut-Ah-Anka’s tomb. An elderly local man cautioned him that desecrating the sacred tomb will cause bad luck. However, the criminal mocked his advisor and struck him. The man deceived the police and made it back to the United States. To his own disbelief, he discovered he was the lucky winner of a lottery. So much for “bad luck”.

He then used his gambling winnings to invest in stocks, tripling his money. Having become wealthy, he bought an ancient castle in Europe. He employed security guards to safeguard his fortune and a personal doctor to maintain good health. Now he could live a rich life thanks to “good” luck.

The man’s enthusiasm was met with doctors observing him on a hospital bed, questioning how long his psychotic state, induced by the tomb’s fumes, will last.
