Synopsis

The Avengers #238 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars
At Avengers Mansion, Starfox now has the duty of sitting with the Vision and he bemoans his fate, having thought that Earth was full of adventure but now he is babysitting a comatose Synthezoid. Vision speaks up, expressing sympathy and surprising Starfox….

In New Orleans, Monica Rambeau is shopping for a boat while brooding over how Blackout and Moonstone were able to trap her then escape as she was Captain Marvel (last issue)….

In New York, Vision reveals that he had come out of the coma several days earlier and had (mostly) enjoyed listening to each Avenger as they sat with him. He is puzzled as to why he is not able to repair himself further, lacking the data to do so; Starfox suggests linking to ISAAC, the world computer on his home planet of Titan. After checking with Jarvis about the system’s capabilities, they send a message to Titan and ISAAC responds….

She-Hulk, Wasp, and Scarlet Witch, in civilian clothes, go hunting for an apartment for Jen. They find an ideal place but the rental agent balks at giving the apartment to a woman as strange as Jen. The ladies are angry and depart, Wanda casting a hex that opens up the sprinklers on the guy….

In New Orleans, Monica wonders why the authorities have no leads on Moonstone and Blackout; she changes into Captain Marvel and is at Avengers Mansion in a split second. Inside she is startled to find technology moving around the house by itself. Starfox explains he is constructing a medical scanner linked to ISAAC on Titan; Vision reveals he is awake to Monica and thanks her for her stories of New Orleans while watching him. Starfox turns on the machine and Vision is merged with the house computer and ISAAC….

Jen, Jan, and Wanda return to the Mansion—to be greeted by a giant holographic head of Vision over the building. Inside, he explains his new capabilities, unlimited power, and knowledge, and he can find their two missing enemies…

…who are in a Bronx hideout. Knowing Blackout’s claim to contain the power of a black star is nonsense, Moonstone drugs him into telling her his real origin. Mark Daniels, assistant to Dr. Abner Croit, was accidentally transformed into a conduit for dark force of the type possessed by the Russian Darkstar and Shroud. Moonstone realizes that Daniels’ mind could not grasp what had happened to him so he created the simpler story. As she ponders a way to use his powers for her own ends, Vision appears behind her and orders her to surrender. She awakens Blackout and they try to fight Vision but he isn’t really there, he’s just a projection—but the rest of the Avengers are. The heroes burst in and Moonstone smashes a hole in the floor for them to drop through, Blackout sealing it with his energy. Wanda causes the dark energy to melt and solidify around the two baddies, trapping them. Moonstone tells her ally to merge the Avengers with the dark force and destroy them but he merges the two of them and they vanish into another dimension. Vision “returns” to the Mansion and continues to repair himself, his talk of unlimited power worrying some of him teammates. There is a priority call, it is Tigra in San Francisco, telling them that Jessica Drew is dying—but the ghost of Spider-Woman is hovering over her….

Review / Commentaries

The Avengers #238 Review by (January 21, 2023)
Comments: Vision has been in a coma since issue #233. Thor is said to be on a mission in space (THOR #334-335) and Captain America has some personal business (CAP #286-289). Revelation: Beast (who is absent) is a major Roger Corman fan. Moonstone and Blackout return in DAZZLER #32; after that they face the Avengers again in issues #270 and following. The main story skips next issue and the Spider-Woman plot is picked up in issue #240. The letters page includes one by future Marvel writer Mike Kanterovich (SECRET DEFENDERS etc.).

Review: Vision gains a lot of new powers, along with an ego! Pretty cool comeback for the comics’ most popular Synthezoid with a lot of concern for where this is going next. Meanwhile, Jen, Jan, and Wanda strike back against a cartoon bigot, though if the guy had balked at having a superhero in the building they would have had no argument, considering the history of heroes and villainous visitors. And Blackout is given an alternate origin because Roger Stern thought the original one made no sense; quick, keep this guy away from Spider-Man!
