In a hospital, Dr. Jane Foster sits contemplating the chemotherapy which is intended to halt the cancer which is slowly spreading through her body and killing her. As she watches television, she sees a Roxxon weather station bombarded by the bodies of dead elves, crippling the craft and sending it in a death spiral toward Earth. She summons Mjolnir and at once she is transformed into the Mighty Thor….
The Avengers arrive in Washington D.C. where the space station is expected to make landfall but Thor already has it in hand, slowing the craft’s fall so that it hits the reflecting pool and grinds to a stop. After ascertaining that the crew is well, she excuses herself, knowing that Malekith is behind it, having invaded Alfheim to begin a war of the Realms. Thor returns to the hospital, transforming back into the weakened form of Jane Foster as we learn that her transformations purge the effect of the chemo from her body. She awakens her companion Volstagg and together they journey to Asgard….
The Golden Realm is now deserted, the gods afraid of the All-Father Odin who sits in his palace guarded by the Destroyer. Jane and Volstagg take their places in the Congress of the Worlds where the Senator from Alfheim accuses Malekith of initiating a war. The Dark Elf Senators deny any such thing; Jane testifies to the atrocities but she can’t claim to be an eyewitness without revealing that she is the new outlaw Thor. The Congress then does nothing about this aggression. Jane visits Freyja in prison where Odin has left her but the All-Mother chooses not to act against her husband at this time and Thor Odinson is missing, gone where he would not be found. Frustrated, Jane becomes Thor once more and asks Heimdall for use of Bifrost to head to Alfheim; he denies her, citing the command of the All-Father. Then Cul Borson arrives with guards to arrest her….
In the Yawning Void, Malekith gloats over his invasion of Alfheim while Roxxon head Dario Agger is miffed at the sacrifice of his space station. The Dark Elf lord then tells the rest of his allies that someone has applied to be a member of their Dark Council; Ulik, Laufey, and demons from Muspelheim debate the admittance of the new member—Loki, once again a bad guy….
