Synopsis

Vision and the Scarlet Witch #4 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Doctor Strange examines the Scarlet Witch and confirms that Wanda is, indeed, pregnant. She realizes that magick was the key to making it possible; Strange sets up an appointment schedule like a real obstetrician while marveling at the miracle….

A group of real estate investors led by a guy named Spector are making plans with local realtor Norman Webster when Spector reveals that he doesn’t want Vision and the Scarlet Witch moving into town; Norm refuses even though he will lose their business. He also warns them that the Avengers couple now has a state of the art in their new home, as their last house was burned down. A young couple (Glamor and Illusion) sees the disgruntled investors leave and decides to keep an eye on them….

Wanda arrives at their new home where Vision is waiting to go in with her for the first time. She reveals the good news and he is literally knocked back onto his bottom. They hug and passing drivers honk their horns in support….

Spector and his cronies lay plans to drive Vision and Wanda out; the young couple watches and decides to take action. Glamor magically departs for their club….

As Wanda and Vision make plans to welcome a baby, Spector contacts a guy he knows at the electric company and bribes him into shutting off the power for five minutes at a certain time that night. Glamor and Illusion arrange to have another magician take their place at their theater called Magic Mansion while they follow up on Spector’s scheme….

Vision, concerned about another bigoted attack on them, uses a desire to go for a walk around the neighborhood as an excuse to check out the town. Spector and his gang head for the heroes’ house through the woods but they are attacked by trees, leaves, rocks, and owls and flee in panic, thanks to Glamor and Illusion. Wanda also goes for a walk in the neighborhood, musing on how most of the locals accept them; she stops off at the library to check out some books on pregnancy and Agatha Harkness’ ghost appears to her, warning her of what will happen at the upcoming All Hallow’s Eve….

Vision discovers Glamor and Illusion lurking near his house and attacks them; there is a brief battle, Illusion demonstrating he has control over the molecules of anything he touches and Glamor can manipulate the molecules of her own body. They capture Vision and hold him long enough to explain that they are good guys, a married couple who live in Leona, come to help protect Vision and Wanda….

As she near her home, Wanda is captured by Spector and his men; she hexes them into the trees and explains that she just had the news that she is pregnant and only wants a safe place to raise her family just like them. Her speech wins over the baddies so she lets them down to the ground and they depart. Vision comes upon them at this time and they go home together, Wanda noting that there is no turning back….

Review / Commentaries

Vision and the Scarlet Witch #4 Review by (November 23, 2022)

Review: Two plots occupy this issue: first, Wanda exults in the news that she is pregnant which many readers, as well as the issue’s villains, can sympathize with; I can remember those giddy days of anticipation many years ago and the wife and I are now waiting while our daughter is eagerly expecting her first child. It’s a wonderful feeling that many can share in and here it is immortalized in this comic—though presumably no one out there had to resort to magic to make it happen.

The other plot is one that Marvel has dealt in from the beginning of the Silver Age: a condemnation of bigotry. These are generally good in a vague kind of way, depending on how much effort they make to keep the bigot from becoming a caricature of a position. This issue handles it fairly well, as Wanda is able to establish common ground with her enemies and deal with the matter in a non-violent way among people.

Comments: First appearance of Glamor and Illusion. Vision and Wanda’s first house was burned in AVENGERS #252. The town librarian is identified as Holly LaDonna next issue; she was the little girl possessed by an evil spirit in VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH (1982) #1, Bad guy Spector appears to be no relation to Marc Spector, Moon Knight. The Idols of Zor were previously seen in POWER MAN AND IRON FIST #102.
