Chapter Three: the Quest for Thor

Synopsis

War of the Realms #3 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

At Avengers Mountain, Freyja takes on the task of leading a party to destroy Malekith's Black Bifrost, so she asks Captain America to lead a team to rescue Thor in Jotunheim....

In Asgard, Heimdall endows Daredevil with his own powers and with a new Guardian, the Rainbow Bridge is active once more. Jane Foster, the New All-Mother, advises them all to prepare to defend the bridge from enemy attacks....

Captain America leads a team (Spider-Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Iron Fist) into Jotunheim in search of Thor; they are attacked by Frost Giant archers and fight back....

Freyja's party (Punisher, Blade, She-Hulk, Ghost Rider) arrive in Svartalfheim, disguised as Dark Elves (plus a big green troll and a Fire Goblin). Their cover is quickly blown so they drop their costumes and jump aboard GR's car and head for the Black Bifrost....

In London, Malekith has defeated the defenders, including Union Jack, Spitfire, and Black Knight and claimed the latter's sword, the Ebony Blade, as his prize. But more heroes arrive: Captain Marvel, Captain Britain, Sif, Venom, Winter Soldier, Deadpool, and Weapon H....

Malekith's Dark Elves arrive in Asgard to destroy the real Bifrost. Tony Stark and Shuri are in the bowels of Avengers Mountain, aiding Screwbeard in building weapons as Black Panther coordinates the defense of the Arctic base. Roz Solomon leads the Agents of Wakanda in fighting Roxxon for possession of Antarctica. Sub-Mariner battles invading fire sharks in Atlantis. Ulik the troll claims Australia. Enchantress raises an army of the dead to conquer South America. In Wakanda, the Dora Milaje fight the Angels. The Fantastic Four are the last defenders of Manhattan....

In Jotunheim, Cap's team hears Thor's screams and hurries to his aid....

Svartalfheim: Freyja's party sets She-Hulk to wrecking the enemy's bridge....

London: Malekith kills Venom with the Ebony Blade....

Asgard: Daredevil, overwhelmed with the sounds from the entire Ten Realms, is distracted long enough for a Dark Elf suicide bomber to destroy the Rainbow Bridge....

Freyja learns that Bifrost has been destroyed and so changes their mission: hold the Black Bifrost or all of the heroes will be trapped in other realms....

Cap's team comes upon a massive number of dead giants and, in the center, is Thor, mad with the berserker's blood lust, lashing out on all sides....

Review / Commentaries

War of the Realms #3 Review by (May 1, 2019)

Review: Action-packed installment shortchanges the characters in that most of them are only seen in battle and very briefly at that. But the plot must move forward and so it does with a lot of cutting between the various teams (as reflected in the synopsis). And again Russell Dauterman does wonders to make it all look both lucid and exciting.

Comments: Issue includes a map of Earth divided up among the conquerors, some of Russell Dauterman's costume design sketches, Giuseppe Camuncoli and Elia Bonetti's variant covers for the series, a list of May issues in the event, and an ad for the forthcoming THE ART OF THE WAR OF THE REALMS.
