War of the Realms #4 Review by (May 15, 2019)

Review: Action-packed installment shortchanges the characters in that most of them are only seen in battle and very briefly at that. But the plot must move forward and so it does with a lot of cutting between the various teams (as reflected in the synopsis). The final scene of Odin and Freyja isn't as moving as the creators would have us think, largely because he's been portrayed as a self-absorbed idiot for so long that we've ceased to care about him. Freyja, however, I still liked so maybe I'll be sorry to see her go, with all of her smug superiority. I found this issue to be a bit less lucid: I could not follow the part with Shuri and the Celestial so I guess the longer version was in a tie-in I didn't see. Still keeping our interest even if the epic is now slowing down to leave room for the tie-ins.

Comments: Most of the characters on the cover do not appear in the issue. Issue includes a map of Earth divided up among the conquerors, some of Russell Dauterman's costume design sketches, Giuseppe Camuncoli and Elia Bonetti's variant covers for the series, a list of May issues in the event, and an ad for the forthcoming THE ART OF THE WAR OF THE REALMS.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

War of the Realms #4 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In Alfheim the survivors of the War including the Queen and Sir Ivory Honeyshot see that Black Bifrost open and a figure emerge: it is Frank Castle, the Punisher, come to bring them to the battle....

In Asgardia the Dark Elf saboteurs wait for reinforcements that never come, leaving the All-Mother Jane Foster, Daredevil, and Heimdall at a loss....

In Svartalfheim, Freyja, armed with and empowered by the sword known as the Bitterblade, holds the Black Bifrost while her companions are dispatched to the other realms to gather allies: She-Hulk to the Dwarves of Nidavellir, Blade to the Vanir of Vanaheim, Ghost Rider to the giant spiders of Niffleheim....

In Jotunheim, Captain America, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist return with the rescued Thor to Avengers Mountain where Black Panther and Thori lead the defense against the invaders. Shuri, in control of the dead Celestial, unleashes its power and the results are devastating. Meanwhile, Odin, learning that Freyja has been left alone in Svartalfheim, demands to be sent to join her....

All around Midgard, the heroes are fighting Malekith's forces: in China it's Captain Marvel, Silk, and Shang-Chi. Roz Solomon leads the Agents of Wakanda against the Frost Giants destroying New York. But Malekith is at Stonehenge, twisting Venom to his own wicked purposes....

Malekith goes to Svartalfheim and spears Freyja though the torso with a distorted Venom; as he crows, Odin arrives, wearing the armor designed for him by Tony Stark. The estranged couple reconcile in battle and both give their lives to destroy the Black Bifrost....

As the new forces assemble, Jane prepares to send them into battle...and the army's leader steps forward: the Mighty Thor.....
