Hawkeye and Mockingbird awaken as
captives, tied to a rack in a mortuary. The mastermind enters and
introduces himself: Crossfire, ex-CIA agent turned mercenary bent on
eliminating all costumed heroes. His current plan is to kill Hawkeye
and his company will be hired to arrange the funeral. With all of the
superheroes in attendance, Crossfire will activate his new
mind-control device and send them into a rage, killing one another.
Why me? Hawkeye asks. Because he is the weakest most vulnerable of
the heroes and so easiest to kill. Ouch. Crossfire orders Oddball and
Bombshell to take the two into the White Room where they will be
guinea pigs for the mind-control weapon. Realizing there is no way
out, H and M share a tender moment and a kiss—and then Crossfire
turns on the machine. They try to resist but quickly begin battling
one another and Hawkeye is clearly outclassed without his bow. After
Hawks takes a real beating, Crossfire turns off the machine just to
see how long it takes them to recover. While he has his wits, Hawkeye
realizes he has some special arrowheads concealed on his person; he
selects a hypersonic head and pops it into his mouth. When the
machine is switched on again the arrowhead cancels out the ultrasound
device. In his right mind, Hawks uses his brute strength to knock
Mockingbird out—and then he fakes passing out. Crossfire sends
Oddball and Bombshell to bring the heroes out of the White Room and
Hawkeye, although mostly deaf from the sonics, conks the two henchmen
on the head and heads off to confront the Big Bad. Hawks enters to
find Crossfire aiming his own bow at him—but the villain isn't
strong enough to pull the bow and he drops the explosive arrow,
knocking himself out. Recovering his bow and quiver, Hawkeye, fearing
he's killed Mockingbird weeps over her but she awakens and they kiss.
After the police have picked up the baddies, Mockingbird suggests to
Hawkeye that they become a team—and a couple. Hawkeye, unwilling to
let her know he is deaf, says “See you around” and walks off,
confusing her....
Epilogue: Later we see Clint and Bobbi
in a honeymoon cottage in the Poconos, glad that she ran after him
and demanded a real answer. And for now they are going to live
happily ever after....
