Avengers #72 Review by (March 12, 2021)
This issue begins a 4-issue story The Search For She-Hulk.

In #74-75 it will involve her cousin Bruce Banner/Hulk. He is currently in a gap between a story arc ending in #76 of his own series and another starting in #77, during which he's wandering around cropping up in other titles. His devastation of Bone, Idaho must have occurred during this period, but isn't referenced outside this series.

Captain America, Iron Man and Scarlet Witch are the only Avengers available at the moment. Wasp and Yellowjacket are on vacation in Las Vegas as we saw last issue. Ant-Man, Falcon and Jack Of Hearts were injured during the Red Zone story (#65-70) (but they were well enough to appear in Alias #28). Thor is still off ruling Asgard, and Black Panther is back in Wakanda. Warbird quit to join Homeland Security in #70. But I must admit I don't know why Vision isn't here.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers #72 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
Jennifer Walters walks in to Bone, Idaho, a town recently trashed by her cousin the Hulk. Like him she's trying to keep her other id from emerging because these days she's not in control of She-Hulk's actions, since she was infected by the Red Zone bug and her gamma-radiation was depleted by Jack Of Hearts (in #67-68). Deputy Lance Howards watches her arrive.

She walks into a diner and asks what she can have for 3 dollars. The waitress Mona takes pity on her and says that will buy her anything she wants. A TV report says Hulk hit Boise, and Banner was recently seen in Idaho Falls. Lance joins her and tries to hit on her, which Mona says he does to any woman new in town. Jen flees to the washroom to avoid revealing her name, using calming techniques to keep the green away. Mona joins her and Jen claims she's in Idaho to see her cousin. She used to visit him in Dayton in the Summer when they were kids, and she'd help him avoid his abusive father. Now she needs *his* help.

Lance returns to the office where his mother Sheryl is Sheriff. Then a quinjet lands and disgorges Captain America, Iron Man and Scarlet Witch. Lance is gobsmacked, especially by the sight of the "Avengers' mutant", who tells him she prefers to be called Wanda and cures his persistent cold with a hex. Iron Man tells them they're not here as part of the government's hunt for the Hulk, they're looking for Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk. They show a picture of Jen and Lance recognises her.

Mona leaves Jen to freshen up. But when our heroine re-enters the restaurant she finds it deserted and some waffles catching fire on the stove. Then the Witch snuffs the flames out and asks Jennifer for a chat. She says that Cap and IM have emptied the place but they thought it would be safer if Wanda met her alone. She says the Avengers are here to help but Jen says they can't and tries to leave. But SW brings a roof beam down to block her exit (a bit of an overreaction if you ask me). Jen says she's afraid that she'll change to She-Hulk and hurt her friends. Wanda tells her not to get angry, but Jen replies that it's fear that makes her change now, not anger. And change she does.
