Synopsis

Avengers (2010 series) #17 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
The talking heads this time are nearly all characters who actually appear in the story, talking about the story. Indeed in some cases the only way we know what is happening is because they tell us. The exception is Captain America, who appears in the final 2 talking head panels confirming that the talking head interviews are for a book, and asking that it be dedicated to the recently-(supposedly-)deceased Bucky Barnes.

Hawkeye, Ms Marvel, Protector and Spider-Woman are back from Brazil (#15 & Fear Itself #3), and Avengers Tower has fallen (#14). Sin/Red Skull/Skadi and her Nazi war machines are clustered round the ruins. Spider-Woman figures they're after Heimdall's Asgardian Observatory, which was on top of the Tower.

Hawkye shoots an arrow through Skadi's neck, but it doesn't faze her. Ms Marvel attacks, and faces blasts from Skadi's hammer. She absorbs the force, and then returns it to sender. Skadi is staggered. But a fiercer blast downs Carol Danvers.

At this point the New Avengers join the fight:- Iron Fist (back from China in Iron Man 2.0 #5-7), Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Mockingbird, Spider-Man, Wolverine and their latest recruit Daredevil (NAv#16).

Then Protector remotely activates the old suits of Iron Man armour that Tony Stark kept in the building. Many are damaged by the Tower-fall, but they can still pack a punch. Especially Norman Osborn's Iron Patriot suit. But even they are only a holding measure, while Protector figures out how to send a virus into the Nazi war machines, and shut them all down.

But Skadi uses the Observatory to teleport away.

Review / Commentaries

Avengers (2010 series) #17 Review by (February 12, 2013)
5th and final Fear Itself tie-in issue. As I mentioned last issue, the cover and the Previews blurb are all about the Hawkeye/Spider-Woman romance, which doesn't even get a mention inside. The book the interviews are for is of course Avengers Assemble, An Oral History of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, although the actual published book doesn't get anywhere near as a far as Fear Itself. Captain America is only a talking head. Iron Man doesn't even make it that far this time. But his suits of armour play a vital role, so I'm including this issue in his Library. Heimdall's Observatory replaced Sentry's Watchtower on top of Avengers Tower in Siege #4, after Sentry died. I believe Protector here disables *all* Sin's war machines, thus ending the battle of New York. This places this issue at the end of FI#5. Sin presumably teleports to Serpent's Dark Asgard where we'll find her in FI#6.
