Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers #683 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
The Elders of the Universe Grandmaster and Challenger have stolen the Earth to use as a gameboard for their teams of aliens to compete to reach 5 Pyramoids. They froze most of Earth's superbeings in stasis leaving some Avengers to act as obstacles for the teams. The Black Order and the Lethal Legion have won 1 Pyramoid each, but the obstacle Avengers managed to win 2 others. Now the 5th Pyramoid has been placed. And Challenger has revealed his hidden piece, the supposedly-dead Hulk.

Lightning zaps into the Avengers Auxiliary HQ to ask Voyager to transport Rogue's team of Avengers from the Antarctic. He's surprised to find Enigma there with Toni Ho (ex-Iron Patriot) and Gen'l Maverick (Red Hulk). They explain that Aikku Jokinen unfroze when Red Wolf 'died' winning the 4th point. Also Voyager just left so Toni will send a quinjet to Rogue.

The 5th Pyramoid has landed on the roof of the Lenox Hospital in Manhattan where Beast and Wasp (Nadia Pym) are trying to cure Edwin Jarvis. It has unleashed ghosts to plague the staff and patients. Henry McCoy and Nadia have identified the alien pathogen in Edwin's brain, and devised an antidote. Beast tells Wasp to prepare an injector of antidote and shrink down to administer it. He's going to deal with the ghosts.

But Hank finds that the wraiths are quite physical and attacking the humans. So he decides to solve the problem at source. He'll touch the Pyramoid to win it. This should make it and its effects go away, but also disintegrate *him*. He pops back to tell Nadia what he's going to do, but she gives him the antidote and shrinks *him* (on a 15-minute timer). She says he's more important to the Avengers than her. After all there are 2 Wasps. So *she*'s going to get the Pyramoid.

Beast can't unshrink himself so he enters Jarvis' bloodstream to save him, and Wasp heads out to sacrifice herself. But when she gets to the Pyramoid she finds that it repels her before she can touch it. She tries to shrink it with Pym Particles but that doesn't work either.

Beast makes his way to the hippocampus but has to dodge miniature lightning bolts - neurons communicating electrically. Meanwhile Wasp has abandoned her fruitless attempts on the Pyramoid and turned instead to rescuing people from the ghosts by shrinking them and carrying them outside in armfuls.

Inside the memory centre of Edwin's brain Hank McCoy sees visions of Avengers teams throughout the years. Butler Jarvis was there through it all. Then he finds the pathogen which is now bigger than him. But it grabs him with a tentacle and he drops the antidote gun. As it is about to swallow him Wasp zaps the alien with the antidote. She explains how she couldn't get the Pyramoid so she evacuated the building, and then came to help him.

They exit through Jarvis' ear and see him beginning to wake up. Then the Pyramoid appears in the room followed by Voyager. As the duo cheer her on Jarvis tries to tell them something's wrong. He finally gets them to listen - Valerie Vector was never an Avenger. Their memories of her are false. Henry realises that Voyager wasn't in any of Edwin's memories he saw, as she teleports away with the final Pyramoid.
