Story Name:

I’ve Been in the Desert with an Orb with No Shame

Synopsis

Avengers Spotlight #21 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Story continued from SOLO AVENGERS #20.

Having escaped from Plantman’s Dome of Life in the desert, Hawkeye and Orb are fighting, the villain blaming Clint for their being trapped in the wasteland with minimal food or water. Hawkeye punches some sense into Orb and they begin walking. Eventually they reach a deserted town. Hawkeye phones the West Coast Avengers for help and leaves a message on the answering machine. And then he discovers that Orb’s motorcycle gang is there, having been the site of their rendezvous. Orb gloats over how they are going to kill the archer but the bikers shoot down the Orb and Hawkeye flees. Running into a single biker, Clint clobbers him, discovering when the guy’s head comes off that the biker gang is made up of Plantman’s minions who have killed and replaced the real biker gang. He traps most of the gang with a net arrow, then uses a flame arrow to ignite spilled gasoline, which wraps up the bulk of the baddies, only two left over to pursue Hawkeye. Cornered and out of arrows, Hawkeye prepares for battle and then Wonder Man arrives to take them on, followed by Hank Pym; the two heard his message and flew out in a Quinjet to get him….

“The Comedy of Eros” 2/5
Writer: Peter Gillis. Pencils: Tomasina Cawthorn Artis. Inks: Josef (Joe) Rubinsten. Colors: Paul Becton. Letters: Michael Heisler.

Synopsis: Starfox has a mission that takes him to the planet Rescorla where the oxlike natives have a severely repressive morality which is enforced with extreme violence. Nevertheless, they have no qualms about selling forbidden wares in their market. Eros pretends he is shopping for a slave but he is actually there to rescue sexy old friend Heater Delight, who had sold herself into slavery to escape a persistent (and royal) suitor. Eros pays the price and hypnotizes the seller into making blasphemous statements and he and Heater flee, escaping the Rescorlans and making it to a waiting ship and away.

Avengers Spotlight #21 Review by (June 28, 2022)

Review: Hawkeye’s dumb adventure wraps up in a more violent vein than anticipated. The murder of the Orb is quite graphic for Marvel in this era, even with most of his body blacked out. And it is never explained why the town is deserted, surely an important point. But as I said, it’s a lot of fun.

And then there’s Starfox, perhaps my least favorite Avenger. Why? Well, since his one superpower is the ability to create sexual arousal, it feels like his every appearance is a dirty joke or something that sounds like a toned-down dirty joke to get it past the censors. And here his foils are a cartoonishly hypocritical set of violent prudes that he has to outsmart; no problem, since they are also bone stupid. Nothing particularly interesting. Unlikable hero versus uninteresting bad guys in pointless story, set apart by mediocre art and terrible color printing. Feh.

Comments: First issue by this title; issues #1-20 were titled SOLO AVENGERS. First story: Part three of three parts. Title is a parody of the song “A Horse with No Name” by the group America. Hawkeye refers to a Fribble, an ice cream drink made at the Friendly’s restaurant chain. Orb is revealed to be alive in DEADLINE #2 years later. Second story: Title is a pun on “Comedy of Errors,” a familiar phrase and also the title of a Shakespeare play. Heater Delight first appeared in WARLOCK #12. Only appearance of the Rescorlans. There’s a joke about the American Express credit card slogan, “Don’t leave home without it.”
