A possible future shows us Natasha Romanova on a romantic sailboat ride with Matt Murdock. They are happy and deeply in love and then Matt proposes….

Black Widow recoils from the vision the Prophet is putting in her head. He tells her it is a glimpse of her future if she accepts his offer to become an agent of Chaos. The organization is responsible for the building of Dubai, having seen it in the future, they had their agents in the past guide the decisions that led to this city. Prophet spirits Natasha to a fishing village on the coast of Japan, telling her she disrupted his plans when Damon Dran grew afraid and rebelled. She wants to know what he wants from her. He responds with the Biblical account of Christ’s miraculous catch of fish on the Sea of Galilee. He draws the lesson that if she joins them her life would be so much better….

At SHIELD Headquarters, Maria Hill is coordinating the search for Black Widow as Winter Soldier patrols the skies in a jet. The realize that if Natasha is in over her head then they all are….

Natasha asks the Prophet what right he and his company has to decide what is good for humanity, accusing them of merely wanting power. He tells her she’s wrong and that he regrets using the carrot (a reward) rather than the stick (a punishment) to persuade her. So she draws a knife and slashes Prophet’s face, pushing him back into the sea. He then teleports them to the top of a tall building in Dubai, and then onto a city street. She grabs him by the throat and he teleports them to an icy landscape where he floats away to leave her. But she shoots a cord around his ankle and they fall to the ice. He tells her that she could have been special had she chosen to join them and walks away. She chases him but runs into a band of the invisible agents. She removes her belt, arms the explosives inside, and hurls it at them. The blast hurls her unconscious into icy water….

As Hill and Bucky continue the search for her, Isaiah Ross assures Liho the cat that Natasha will be back….

Black Widow (2014 series) #17 Review by (November 25, 2025)

Review: Well, that was that. We learn Chaos is people from the future guiding the present through their agents. Nat is asked to join and she refuses, citing free will and accusing them of only wanting power. So they try to kill each other and Chaos appears to win. While Christ’s miracle of the catch of fish is explicitly cited as a vague metaphor for the brighter future, the issue more closely recalls Satan’s temptation of Christ, though not to reproducing all the details. But Nat sees the trap and rejects his offer. Things get violent.

The art however, is quite lovely, especially in the opening fantasy of a happy future for Nat and Matt—and even in the issue’s icy climax.

Comments: Part six of six parts. Christ’s miraculous catch of fish is found in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 5, verses 1-11. A different but similar miracle is found in the Gospel of John, chapter 21, versus 1-6. The Temptation of Christ is found in Matthew’s Gospel 4:1-11 and Luke’s Gospel 4:1-11.
