Doc Savage The Man of Bronze #1 Review by (February 15, 2010)
Additional credits: plotted by Roy Thomas a) Part one of an adaptation of the novel “The Man of Bronze” by “Kenneth Robeson” (Lester Dent); b) first appearance of Doc Savage in a Marvel title; c) the Autogyro and Roadster aside, the story is clearly set in the 1970s with modern cars and a laser rifle in evidence; d) Doc’s skimpy mini-vest over a bare chest would seem a bit impractical, but does give him more of a superhero look; e) Monk’s hair incorrectly colored black; this would be corrected by issue 3 due to reader reaction; f) Doc Factor: the story contains the first appearances or mentions of a number of familiar elements including the 86th floor headquarters, the Go-Devil (though not called by name), the Roadster, the Autogyro, Doc’s upbringing, the Fortress of Solitude, Hidalgo, Monk and Ham’s bickering, Ham’s wardrobe and sword cane, Ham’s legal expertise, Renny’s door-breaking, Johnny’s big words (including “I’ll be superamalgamated”), Doc’s impassivity, his golden eyes, his exercise regimen, his expertise in hypnosis, his calling his aides, “brothers,” and ending with Doc’s oath to fight crime; g) issue also includes a brief text article “Meet Doc Savage and His Amazing Friends!” giving capsule profiles of the six heroes.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Doc Savage The Man of Bronze #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro
A man garbed in the outfit of a Mayan warrior climbs the girders of an unfinished New York skyscraper and trains the sights of his laser rifle on the windows of an 86th floor office in the distance. In that office, Doc Savage’s men anxiously await their leader, returning from a visit to his Fortress of Solitude in the Arctic. When Doc arrives, they inform him of the recent death of his father from a mysterious illness. Doc examines his father’s papers directing him to the Central American republic of Hidalgo. At this moment the assassin fires, but his shot is deflected by the distorting glass in the windows. Determining the origin of the shot, Doc and his men head out to the construction site, where they engage in a cat-and-mouse chase with the sniper. Finally capturing him, Doc attempts to hypnotize him into revealing his motives but the Mayan resists and throws himself off the scaffolding to his death. Doc and the aides return to their headquarters to find a warning scrawled on the wall. Doc and his friends join in a vow to do everything they can to fight evil wherever they find it. In an epilogue, the sniper’s accomplice reports to their leader, the Son of the Feathered Serpent, who vows the death of Doc Savage.
