Synopsis

Gargoyle (1985 series) #4 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

Isaac Christians, the Druid Derwyddon, and Germaine arrive in Blackston where the Gargoyle has transformed the citizens into monsters cavorting with wicked abandon. Isaac is fearful but Derwyddon stays him and Germaine as the Gargoyle approaches to mock the newcomers. The monster proudly shows them around the town, admiring his own handiwork. But Derwyddon denounces it as a mockery of Druidic teaching. Gargoyle orders his minions to kill Derwyddon but the Druid blasts them away then casts the spell returning them to stone. But the transformed humans pursue Derwyddon and the others, as the Druid is now out of power. Isaac leads them into a church which Derwyddon openly despises. Isaac cares for Derwyddon, recalling how he once ministered to Buster Henderson; Isaac recalls how he saw his friend Clarence killed so he panicked and ran, right into he path of a German soldier who was about to shoot him when Buster arrived and shot the German first. Buster and Isaac hid in a cottage surrounded by the enemy. Isaac later learned that Buster had escaped death by hiding under a pile of corpses; so it was a way to atone for his fear that he charged the Germans and was shot down. Derwyddon then feels a peace and strength coming over him which he realizes is coming from the crucifix on the wall, finally coming to realize all gods are one. The Druid goes out to confront the creatures and they revert to their human identities, the ancient spirits blowing away into the sky. Gargoyle attacks Derwyddon but Isaac dashes out to save him as he failed to save Buster. Isaac faces the Gargoyle and forces them to change back. “Isaac” vows revenge so Isaac does the only thing he can: he slashes the old man’s throat, ending his threat. The Gargoyle’s spirit returns to the stone figure and remains there. Derwyddon takes his leave, wishing them well. Gargoyle discovers that Elaine is now Elaine, not Germaine; she explains that when Germaine’s spirit was taken to inhabit her body, she tagged along, submerging her personality until she was strong enough to take control. They embrace until a wind takes her away. Gargoyle picks up his dead body and walks off with it, everything now settled.
