Story Name:

Moon Wars!

Synopsis

Iron Man (1968 series) #112 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars
Iron Man joins the Knights of Wundagor in space combat against the invading Rigellians. The heroes assault the command ship where alien leader Arcturus is attempting to force Jack of Hearts into aiding them by threatening to destroy Earth. To create a distraction for his enemies, Arcturus sends the Punisher robot through the teleporter to wreak havoc on Earth. Iron Man pursues it through the portal, emerging on the moon and surprising the Soviet Super-Soldiers. The New Men and the Rigellians spill through the portal next and the Russian heroes join Jack of Hearts and the Knights in fighting the invaders….
On Earth, Madame Masque must manipulate the Tony Stark LMD into ordering the firing of the super-missile at the (unidentified) oncoming Punisher and Iron Man….
[Foreshadowing 1: One of the staff members in the control room is secretly planning to destroy Stark and Shellhead.]
[Foreshadowing 2: Happy and Pepper Hogan are content living on a western ranch, not missing Stark Industries at all.]
The nearly powerless Iron Man hitches a ride on the Punisher by means of magnets but they are hit by the missile, the deadly robot taking the brunt of the blast.  They crash to Earth in Detroit where the hero uses his rocket-powered roller skates and repulsor rays to keep the monster from wrecking the city. Shellhead boosts his power to the max for a few seconds, long enough for him to deliver a major haymaker to his foe, who does not rise again….
On the moon, Arcturus offers to spare Wundagore if the New Men will help him conquer Earth. A Recorder from Rigel suddenly descends having finally tracked the enemy leader down and places him under arrest for colonizing without authority. The Recorder provides a ship to take the Earth heroes home and destroys the egg-shaper teleporter.

Story #2

And Now, For Something Completely Different...

Writer/Penciler/Inker: Fred Hembeck. Colorist: Unknown.

Synopsis

By T Vernon
Rating: 3 stars
Fred Hembeck draws a cartoon letter of comment on recent issues praising Bill Mantlo for including Jack of Hearts and Madame Masque, but wondering why White Tiger wasn't included - all Bill's other creations were! And he puts in a plea for the return of Iron Man's roller skates. Guess what's in the story in this very issue.

Review / Commentaries

Iron Man (1968 series) #112 Review by (November 3, 2014)
Review: Rocket-powered roller skates! A lot of action in this issue, with the battle between Shellhead and the Punisher (no, not that Punisher) taking top honors. Artist Alfredo Alcala was a favorite of mine from the 70s DC horror comics and Marvel’s first adaptation of THE LAND OF OZ (1976), the second in the series. Alcala’s art in those venues almost resembled wood engravings for an interesting look; here he’s modified his style to fit the story a bit, so that it’s not as easily identifiable but still excellent. And Bill Mantlo manages to pull the sprawling plot line all together for a satisfying read.

Comments: Part four of four parts. The Rigellians return in HERCULES (1982) #1-4; the Punisher robot is next seen in SILVER SURFER (1987) #17. This mystery villain is revealed to be the Spymaster in issue #116.
