Nick Fury finds Tony Stark in his Iron Man armor sitting atop a donut place and invites him inside; Fury reveals that Tony’s assistant Natalie Rushton is a SHIELD Agent called Black Widow. Tony reveals that the Palladium in his arc reactor is killing him but Fury has a suggestion. He shows Tony a model of the Stark Expo made years earlier by Tony‘s father Howard Stark and they discover it contains a guide to a new element that can replace the Palladium and save Tony’s life….
James Rhodes is working with Justin Hammer to develop a battle armor based on the one Rhodey stole. A multitude of weapons are thrown in making it a War Machine. At the Stark Expo, Justin Hammer unveils the War Machine armor manned by Rhodey along with several drones based on the same design. Iron Man arrives to reveal that Whiplash (Ivan Vanko) is behind the design and then War Machine attacks Tony with Rhodey unable to keep it under control. Tony takes the fight to the Japanese Garden. Meanwhile, Black Widow and Happy Hogan invade Hammer’s lab and cut the link to the armor so that Rhodey is in control again. Then all of the drones surround the two heroes; Tony cuts them down with his lasers. Then Vanko arrives in his own armor and battles the heroes. Tony and Rhodey fire on him simultaneously and destroy the armor. Vanko then orders the drones to self-destruct and the heroes escape with Tony picking up Pepper Potts on the way. They sort out the CEO/romance thing while Rhodey decides to keep the suit….
Nick Fury meets with Tony and tells him that he is not recommended for the Avengers but offers him a role as a consultant. Tony’s enemy, Senator Stern, is tasked with awarding medals to Tony and Rhodey.
